Dr. Chris Ellison, interim dean of the College of Medicine, announced that Dr. Peter J. Embi has agreed to serve as interim chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics following the June 30 departure of Dr. Philip Payne, who will continue to serve as an adjunct faculty member in the department.

Dr. Embi is associate professor with tenure, executive vice-chair and director of the Division of Clinical and Translational Informatics in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, chief research information officer for the Wexner Medical Center, director of Biomedical Informatics for the OSU Center for Clinical and Translational Science and associate dean for Research Informatics for the College of Medicine. Dr. Embi is also a faculty member in the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Internal Medicine and in the College of Public Health, Division of Health Services Management & Policy.

Since his arrival in 2010, Dr. Embi has been instrumental in multiple initiatives to help advance informatics at Ohio State, including establishing the Division of Clinical and Translational Informatics, launching new education and training programs and establishing new informatics services that enable clinical and translational researchers to access data and information systems and that help bridge Ohio State’s clinical and research enterprises.

Dr. Embi earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida, completed his residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), completed fellowships in Medical Informatics at OHSU and in Rheumatology and Immunology at the Cleveland Clinic and a received a master’s degree in Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology at OHSU. Dr. Embi was one of the first individuals at The Ohio State University and among the first physicians in the nation to become board certified in clinical informatics as accredited by the ACGME.

Internationally recognized for his expertise in the field of clinical research informatics, Dr. Embi’s research focuses on developing and studying novel ways to leverage health information systems, including electronic health records, to improve clinical care and research. He has published more than 110 peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts and book chapters. Dr. Embi is site-PI for the PCORI-funded Clinical Data Research Networks’ Patient-Centered Network of Learning Health Systems, a consortium of Midwestern universities and health systems.

Dr. Embi has held national informatics leadership roles in the American Medical Informatics Association and the American College of Physicians. In 2012, he was inducted a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics.
