About  16 people were killed in overnight attacks at the weekend by gunmen in Borno and Plateau states. In Borno, 12 people were killed when about 30 gunmen, suspected to be members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, on Sunday invaded  the Sandiya village of Danboa Local Government Area on Sunday. The attack was said to be in retaliation for information passed to security men about the sect.

In Plateau, four people   were reported killed on Saturday evening when gunmen attacked the village of Kuka in the Shendam Local Government Area, while a seven year-old boy, identified as Isaiah Samuel from Nafan in Fan district of Barakin Ladi,  was attacked by some unknown gunmen.

The boy as at Sunday was said to be receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos. Also, many were injured in the Borno attack while several houses were razed. The gunmen, who were said to have come under attack by soldiers, while retreating also invaded Arboko and Chinene villages, behind the Gwoza hills.

Executive Director of Stefanos Foundation, Mr. Mark Lipdo, confirmed the killings in a text message to our correspondent in Jos. In Kukah, gunmen suspected to be pastoralists were said to have invaded the village Saturday evening, firing sporadically and setting houses ablaze.

A resident, Malam Abdulrahman Ringim, told newsmen that some armed men laid siege on the village in the evening, fired gun shots, and set fire on some houses in the village. He gave the names of the dead persons  as Malam Inuwa, 60; Yakubu Kaura, 43; Alhassan Abdullahi, 50; and Abdullahi Dungu, 35.

Ringim said that over 20 mosques were also set ablaze. Media Officer to the Special Task Force, Captain Salisu Mustapha, confirmed the incident. He however said that only two people were killed. He said that the attackers, who came in large numbers, were repelled by soldiers attached to the STF. Plateau State government, through the Special Adviser on Peace, Mr. Timothy Parlong, condemned the attack.
