Canonical has announced the release of a new version of its popular Ubuntu operating system. The latest version, Ubuntu 16.10, offers users many updated packages, a preview session of the Unity 8 desktop environment and version 4.8 of the Linux kernel. The distribution also features LibreOffice 5.2 and the update manager application now shows changelogs from enabled personal package archives (PPAs)

Before we get into any details of the upgrade process, we'd like to inform you that Ubuntu 16.10 comes with a newer and more advanced kernel, namely Linux 4.8, as well as up-to-date software components. However, if you're running the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, you shouldn't upgrade just now.

Why? Because Ubuntu 16.10 is a short-term release that will be supported for only 9 months, until July 2017, and Ubuntu 16.04 is a long-term support version that's more stable and more reliable, and you'll get software and security updates for the next 5 years, until April 2021.

However, if for some reason you still want to use Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) on your desktop or laptop computer, then there's no better time to upgrade your installation. To achieve that, please follow the next instructions carefully for a successful Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to Ubuntu 16.10 upgrade process.

Ubuntu MATE 16.10
Martin Wimpress has announced the launch of Ubuntu MATE 16.10. The new version of this official Ubuntu community edition offers a desktop environment and applications which have been ported to the GTK+ 3 toolkit, replacing GTK+ 2.

What is Ubuntu Mate ?

Ubuntu MATE is a desktop Linux distribution which aims to bring the simplicity and elegance of the Ubuntu operating system through a classic, traditional desktop environment - the MATE desktop. MATE is the continuation of the GNOME 2 desktop environment which was used as Ubuntu's default desktop until 10.10 (when it was replaced by Unity). The project began its life as an Ubuntu "remix", but starting with version 15.04, it was formally accepted as an official member of the Ubuntu family of Linux distributions.

The Xubuntu team is pleased to announce the immediate release of Xubuntu 16.10. Xubuntu 16.10 is a normal release and will be supported for 9 months.
This release has seen little visible change since April’s 16.04, however much has been done towards supplying Xubuntu with Xfce packages built with GTK3, including the porting of many plugins and Xfce Terminal to GTK3. Those GTK3 ports can, if one wishes to test them, be installed from one of the team’s development PPAs
