After delivering the beach cottage living room design plan to a happy client, she asked me to also create a design plan for the master bedroom in her new beach cottage.

She wanted something casual and beachy looking to flow with the decor in the rest of the house and make her small bedroom feel more inviting and cozy. One challenge of this space was its’ narrow width, which didn’t allow for much walking room between the foot of the bed and the dresser.Since the bed is the focal point of the room, adding a headboard is essential to giving the room style. However, we didn’t want to take up any more valuable floor space, so I suggested the homeowner create a faux headboard by hanging a set of 4 vintage windows on the wall behind the bed, which would take up no extra floor space.

Here’s a great example of what this would look like from Liz Marie Blog…

To anchor the bed so that it didn’t look like it was floating on the hardwood floor, I chose a soft textural rug to emulate the look of sand. Natural rugs can often be less than comfortable on the feet, but this one from Wayfair is a mix of wool and jute, making it much more cushy on the tootsies.I think one of the best ways to give a space character is to incorporate a mix of furniture in different finishes. It’s definitely not an inspiring look if everything in a room matches and looks like it was a set picked right off of a showroom floor. You definitely don’t want it to look like a crazy mismatch of furniture either though. The key is to look for pieces with similar lines and to keep them within the overall color scheme of the whole room.

Since we were going for a casual, beachy look, I searched for cottage style furniture in white, natural wood, and gray finishes.Another way to give a room distinct character is to layer your bed with a coordinated mix of bedding.  To read more about creating a layered look on your bed, visit THIS POST.

The homeowner had recently painted her bedroom in Benjamin Moore’s Navajo White, which I think was a great choice to keep the room feeling light and airy.In addition to the items shown in this post, there were additional recommendations and specific product selections provided in the client’s custom design plan. Also included in the plan were detailed recommendations and tips for homeowners to implement the design perfectly themselves.
