Mission Bay is San Diego treasure. A saltwater lagoon south of the Pacific Beach community, it is a recreational paradise that preserves San Diego’s natural heritage and the spirit of outdoor adventure. Mission Bay is part of Mission Bay Park, the largest man-made aquatic park in the nation, and its vast area of both land and water makes it the ninth largest municipally-owned park in the U.S. Once a tidal marsh called “False Bay,” Mission Bay Park was first developed into a national park in the 40’s. The park offers endless recreational activities for the adventurously inclined as well as the casual visitor. Camping, jet skiing, wakeboarding and sailing are popular pursuits on the bay, but walking, sunbathing and running along its shores are equally enjoyable for many. Mission Bay includes miles of paths and beaches, and the Aquatic Center offers classes and other opportunities to tourists and residents alike. The Mission Bay Aquatic Center is the world’s largest instructional waterfront facility. On the south end of Santa Clara Point, it is a paradise for watersport enthusiasts of every type. Just a short walk away, surfers can enjoy the waves of the Pacific coast and kayakers can explore the surrounding waters. The MBAC is also a regional boating safety center, dedicated to proper education of boaters and sailors to ensure the safety of everyone in the bay.
