San Diego offers many unique ways to celebrate everything Mom does on Mother’s Day weekend this May. Whether she’s a new mom or has watched her kids grow up and start their own families, there’s many different activities for everyone to enjoy on this family-filled weekend.

Butterfly Festival at the Water Conservation Garden

A great activity for young children and Mom! The Water Conservation Garden celebrates the beginning of butterfly season with the opening of the butterfly pavillion. Families get the chance to interact with butterflies, learn about their life cycle and how to create their own butterfly garden at home. Kids can enjoy special crafts, fun activities and performances. Take a tour of the garden’s butterfly pavillion, attend butterfly workshops and get a head start of making a butterfly garden at home with a plant sale.

Ocean Beach Kite Festival

May 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Families will love the 67th annual OB Kite Festival where kids can participate in kite building, and decorating, games and carnival activities. Professional kite fliers will demonstrate their skills. Prizes will be given to the best decorated kites for those willing to flex their creative muscles. The festival is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Ocean Beach.

Chocolate Festival

May 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This one’s for all the Moms who have a sweet tooth! The San Diego Botanic Garden’s Chocolate Festival is filled with dozens of chocolate tastings, demonstrations a chocolate fountain and more. There will be many children’s activities and Mother’s Day gifts to pick up for Mom.

Mother’s Day Run Benefitting San Diego Rescue Mission

May 10, 7 a.m.

Kick off Mother’s Day the healthy way with a run along beautiful De Anza Cove the whole family can participate in! Anyone from trained runners to casual walkers can join the third Mother’s Day Run benefitting San Diego Rescue Mission who provides support to homeless men, women and children in San Diego.
