Antique 1873 Historical Hand Drawn, Hand Coloured Map of Japan and documents, Vice-Consul of Britain and Imperial Stamp of Emperor Mutsohito.

Historically significant document defining the face of Meiji Japan during the crisis of 1873. Note very rare depiction of Korea in close proximity to Japan. Period also marked the Land Tax Reform in Japan, significant both for allowing private ownership of land and for signaling the beginning of a western style capitalism based on the British model. Map approximately 22 x 14 inches. Stamped and signed with date by Martin Dohmen, Vice-Consulate of Britain in Yedo, Japan, 1873 and issued to Mrs. F. Patterson. Map is hand coloured, hand drawn on very fine Washi (rice) paper and in addition to the detailed drawing and precise calligraphy, is accompanied by a letter stamped by the Emperor.
