2011: The historic Kuau Mart, a family-run business of 17 years, was forced to close by their new landlord Rick Markham, who raised the rent 260%. Three years later, the building remains empty, but remodeling has begun for the opening of a new business. Stay tuned for further updates.

HAWAII EVENTS ON THIS DAY — February 6th

1913: The first books are checked out at the new Library of Hawaii, which opened on Feb. 1.

1940: Historic Volcano House, overlooking Kilauea Crater, is destroyed by a fire fanned by a stiff mountain breeze. The fire began in the kitchen.

1960: Some 5,000 people pay their last respects to Island singer Alfred Apaka at his Nu’uannu Park Mortuary wake.

1965: The Navy sets off a 500-ton charge of TNT on Kaho’olawe to test the effects of high explosives on warship instruments.

1996: John Nahale Miranda is shot and killed by police after holding five people hostage in a Sand Island office for seven hours.

2004: Concrete workers at Ameron Hawaii go on strike after contract talks stall.

1960: Frank F. Baldwin dies on Maui. One of the most effective leaders of the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company (HC&S) empire on Maui, Baldwin began his business relationship with the family fortune in 1906 when he became a manager of HC&S. During his time, he saw the growth and expansion of the business from a sleepy sugar business into one of the largest property management companies in the U.S. In 1911, when his father died, he became manager and president of HC&S. In 1936, he oversaw the conversion of sugar equipment from steam to gas. In 1948, he oversaw the merger of the Maui Agricultural Co. and HC&S Puunene. In 1947 his son Asa took over management of the company, but Frank remained president of Alexander & Baldwin (A&B) until he died.
