TODAY: Paddle Boarder Rescued by Passing Sailboat in Lahaina. A 21-year-old visitor from Boston is safe after being rescued by a passing sailboat after running into difficulty while paddle boarding in West Maui. A search for the woman was launched at around 2:25 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 27, when firefighters received the report. The woman was part of a larger group of six friends who rented paddle boards from the beach equipment rental booth fronting the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa in Lahaina, according to department reports. 1902: The last length of the Commercial Pacific Cable is laid at Waikiki Beach. The first commercial cable message was sent to Hawai’i on Jan. 1, 1903.
1928: Work began on what was called the “hopeful project” of restoring a beach at Waikiki by artificial means.
1931: KGU broadcasts to the Mainland from the edge of Halema’uma’u crater.
1960: Circuit Judge Ronald B. Jamieson rules that John F. Kennedy carried the state of Hawai’i in the presidential election by 115 votes.
1968: The Apollo 8 astronauts, the first humans to circle the moon, are greeted by 10,000 people at Hickam Air Force Base.
1995: The state begins sending inmates to Mainland prisons to relieve overcrowding. The first transfer involved 300 prisoners who were sent to Texas. The ACLU and inmates’ families called the action cruel. (Newly elected Gov. Abercrombie agrees and has vowed to return them and end the pratice.)
1997: A United Airlines jumbo jet on its way from Narita to Honolulu hits massive air turbulence, killing one woman and injuring at least 102 people, some of them seriously.
2011: Community Work Day (CWD) Supports Homeless Resource Center. With the help of a new grant from the federal agency, Center for Disease Control (CDC), a community garden is being planted at Ke Hale A Ke Ola by the Community Work Day Program. More >
2012: Maui Boy is Now Hawaii’s 12th Lieutenant Governor. Former state Senate president Shan S. Tsutsui of Maui officially accepted the position of lieutenant governor of Hawaii on Thursday afternoon. The appointment became effective immediately under the order of succession. The office was vacated on Wednesday by the appointment of former lieutenant governor Brian Schatz to the US Senate. During the announcement, Governor Neil Abercrombie stated that plans are underway to establish an additional Office of the Lt. Governor on Maui, expanding the office’s reach and accessibility to all island communities. More >
