TODAY: July & August Dances & Festivals on Maui
During the months of July and August, the Obon tradition is celebrated at various island Hongwanji missions. This tradition was brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants and has evolved into a social and cultural event as well as the religious custom it was designed as to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making. The dates and times for various festivals follow:

1947:The Advertiser reports that the airport on Moloka’i, which was constructed by the Army during World War II, will be turned over to the Territory of Hawai’i.

1997: Gov. Ben Cayetano allows the reciprocal beneficiary bill to become law without his signature. It gives some rights and benefits of married couples to same-sex couples.

2010: Linda Lingle Vetoed Representative Democracy – In vetoing the Hawaii Civil Unions bill, Governor Linda Lingle said that the issue to grant the rights of marriage to gay or heterosexual couples through a civil union should be decided by voters, not by her or lawmakers. For such idiocy/mendacity, Lingle made COUNTDOWN with Keith Olbermann‘s “Worst Person in the World” list yesterday. Gay rights groups are now considering a boycott of Hawaii. Talk about games ….
