Matthews street paving to begin this week
MATTHEWS – Street paving in Matthews will begin this week and continue through October as part of the town’s annual resurfacing program. The project will cost $716,411 and will be performed by Trull Contracting LLC.
The project will resurface asphalt and include the installation of handicap accessible ramps in certain areas. The company will place door hangers on residences a few days prior to work starting. Residents on affected streets will not be able to park on the roads between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Call 704-785-9456 for more information.

Street closures planned for Matthews Alive
MATTHEWS – The town has planned street closures for the upcoming Matthews Alive Festival, which will run Sept. 4 to 7.
Friday, Sept. 4
South Trade Street will close from John to Main streets, including intersections at McDowell Street and Sadie Drive, at 5 p.m. on Friday to 11 p.m. on Monday. Motorists are encouraged to follow detour signs on N.C. 51. Residents with driveways connected to the closed sections of South Trade Street will have access with assistance from Matthews Police Department.
Saturday, Sept. 5
The Matthews Alive Parade route will require several closures from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Matthews Mint-Hill Road will close at 7:30 a.m. for parade staging. All streets will re-open at the parade’s conclusion.
Monday, Sept. 7
Certain roads will be closed from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. for the Kiwanis 5K.

Coffee with a Cop slated for Sept. 1
MINT HILL – Mint Hill Police Department will host its next installment of Coffee with a Cop on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 9 a.m. Mint Hill residents are invited to come speak with police officers about community issues and ask questions. Contact Chief Tim Ledford at 704-545-1085 for more information.

Matthews swears in new town commissioner
MATTHEWS – The town swore in Goerge Fossett to the town’s board of commissioners at its Aug. 24 meeting. Fossett will fill the seat vacated by former commissioner Joe Pata.
Fossett previously served on the board from 1993 to 1999. He is currently president of The Construction Institute, an education institution for construction professionals. He and his wife, Pat, have lived in Matthews for 28 years. They have two children and three grandchildren.
