The story of Mary, Queen of Scots, will come to an end as The CW’s historical drama TV series has been confirmed to end after Season 4.

The network confirmed that the show has been canceled and will air its final season next year. The series is currently in production for the fourth season, which gives writers time to wrap up Mary’s story and give fans a satisfying conclusion.

Fans now speculate that the show will end with Queen Mary’s execution just as history told it. The Scottish Queen was found guilty of plotting Queen Elizabeth’s assassination.

Rumors of the show being axed started swirling even before the third season ended, given how the ratings of the drama series have significantly dwindled during its third season.

Many were even surprised when the show was given a nod for the fourth season. The historical drama, based on the life of Queen Mary, wasn’t exactly one of The CW’s powerhouse shows

Albeit the first season doing fairly well, it never drew large ratings for it to be one of The CW’s frontrunners.

The show’s ratings plunged down beginning its second season and forward. The third season was moved to a midseason finale sparking rumors of a possible cancellation.

The third season also moved to the dreaded Friday timeslot which further affected its declining ratings.

Additionally, several original cast members have departed the show recently. Both Toby Regbo and Anna Popplewell, who played King Francis and Lola, respectively, have exited the series during the third season after their characters were killed.

Torrance Coombs, who plays Bash, also exited the series as he was cast in ABC’s new show, “Still Star-Crossed.”

The Hollywood Reporter claims that the writers already have seen it coming and so they already are aware how they wanted to give Adelaide Kane’s Mary a fitting end.

Upon finding out the news about the cancellation, stars of the series have aired out their sides. Regbo thanked everyone who watched the show and kept up with it.

He also added that it was a great experience working with the cast and crew of the historical drama. Alan Van Sprang, who portrayed King Henry during the first season, also said his farewell to the drama.

Rose Williams, who plays Princess Claude, shared a photo of her last day on shooting “Reign,” while Coombs comforted fans saying that the final 16 episodes are something to look forward to.

The decision on “Reign” marks The CW’s second cancellation after announcing early this year that its long-running series, “The Vampire Diaries” will end after eight seasons.

The upcoming season of “Reign” will premiere on February 10 and will consist of 16 episodes. Variety expects the show to wrap up by June.

The upcoming season will see the Queen of Scots come head to head with Rachel Skarsten’s Queen Elizabeth.

During the Season 3 finale, Lola’s conspiracy with a Scottish association to kill the English queen leads to her death. Upon learning of Lola’s death, she vows to take revenge on Queen Elizabeth’s throne.

Mary then consolidated her power in Scotland and successfully used the suicide of a Catholic priest as propaganda in gaining support.

Mary also resumes her affair with Gideon after he arrived in Scotland as part of an English delegation. She also asks the help of Gideon to take down Queen Elizabeth.

James found out that John Knox was behind the order to assassinate Elizabeth, but had no evidence.

Bash leaves Mary in order to join the druids and harness his supernatural powers, while Charles safely returned to the French court and ousted Catherine as regent. Catherine then retaliates by parading her third son, Henry, who is next in line to the throne.
