Bob Odenkirk, who plays Jimmy McGill, in the American crime drama TV series “Better Call Saul” on AMC has already confirmed in a recent interview that Gustavo ‘Gus’ Fring, to be played by Giancarlo Esposito, shall be featured in the upcoming third season of the prequel series of the critically-acclaimed “Breaking Bad.”
As fans of “Breaking Bad” know, Gus Fring is the restaurant chain owner cum drug kingpin in New Mexico, who took in Walter White and Jesse Pinkman to expand his drug business in the southwest.
When he went to eliminate Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, the latter devised a plan and set him up during Season 4 of “Breaking Bad” and Gus Fring died during a hospital explosion.
Since “Better Call Saul” is a prequel of “Breaking Bad,” it is understood that Gus Fring is still alive in the former’s timeline.
It would be interesting to know how the character would be introduced in Season 3 of “Better Call Saul” but there is a good chance that the TV series would feature Gus Fring just starting his restaurant business and perhaps his dealings with the Mexican drug cartel.
“Better Call Saul” also features Mike Ehrmantraut, played by Jonathan Banks, who eventually became the lead hit man of Gus Fring in “Breaking Bad.” So the storyline in Season 3 would also feature how Gus Fring came across Mike and turned him into the pragmatic hitman that he eventually became in “Breaking Bad.”
Back in Season 1 of “Better Call Saul,” it was already revealed that Mike is a former police officer in Philadelphia who decided to leave the force after his son was killed by dirty cops. After killing the cops responsible for the death of his son, he decided to quit the force and settle in New Mexico to be able to look after his daughter-in-law and granddaughter.
He became a parking attendant in the parking lot of the Albuquerque Hall of Justice, and that is where he and Jimmy McGill have come to know each other.
Mike also helped out Jimmy in some ways and Jimmy also helped Mike out especially when two cops from Philadelphia came to investigate Mike for his possible involvement in the death of two Philadelphia police officers.
Unlikely for Walter White and Jesse Pinkman to show up
While “Better Call Saul” is all about the transformation of Jimmy McGill into Saul Goodman from being an ordinary lawyer to becoming a true criminal lawyer, with emphasis on the word criminal, the arrival of characters from “Breaking Bad” would certainly spice up the prequel series all the more, details Game & Guide.
In a recent interview, Odenkirk teased that Walter White and Jesse Pinkman may even come in on “Better Call Saul” which is more of a misdirection rather than a hint, critics believe.
In the case of Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul, who was only in his early 20s during the “Breaking Bad” years, he would be anywhere from 16 to 19 years old in the time of “Better Call Saul” so his rumored appearance does not make sense at all.
In the case of Walter White, he is likely a chemistry professor teacher who still have no health and money problems during the time of “Better Call Saul” so it is quite difficult to come up with a particular plotline where he and Jimmy McGill or even Saul Goodman would meet. Perhaps a cameo or a chance meeting would be a possibility but that is all there is to it.
Odenkirk said that he is leaving everything up to show creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould on how they would weave those characters into the story of “Better Call Saul.”
But as it is, it is just very unlikely to make that happen without really making it look that it was really forced.
