SHAWNEE MISSION TEACHERS SET TO GET FIRST PAY RAISE IN 4 YEARS. By Mass Appeal News

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — It’s no secret teachers nationwide are vastly underpaid. However, in the Shawnee Mission School District, administrators are poised to do something about it. On Monday, the board of education signed off on a 3.25 percent pay increase for the base salaries of its 2,100 teachers, equating to roughly $1,316 more annually for new teachers and $2,510 for more experienced teachers equipped with doctorate degrees. The pay hike represents the first in 4 years.

To finalize the deal, however, the National Education Association of Shawnee Mission must now ratify the new contracts. “I think this is really important for our teachers because from the district standpoint, certainly we want to be able to recruit and retain high quality teachers in the classroom,” said Leigh Anne Neal, the spokeswoman for the district.

Also, educators in Blue Valley will hold a similar vote on a new deal approved by their school board that features a two percent pay raise in addition to a one-time three percent pay hike for next year.
