It all started with a kick to the head.
Eight years ago, fourth-grader Spencer Scott was new to football and in search of a position with the St. Germaine Trojans.
Scott ended up as a lineman, but the Trojans also needed a punter. So one day in practice, he picked up a ball and booted it out of sight.
“I looked up, like, ‘Wow, I can’t even see it! That ball must have gone far,’ ” he recalled.
That’s when he felt a thud on top of his helmet. Plenty of hang time. Zero yards.
“That wasn’t good,” he said. “I decided to pick it up. I wanted to fix that.”
