YOKE DU YOUR

“I think I squandered my youth having had children so young,” said one woman to her friend. “I want them to travel and see the world before they start a family.”

“I want my children to have everything I couldn’t afford when I was young,” said the other. “And then give it to me!”

ARTspiration

Artists or art that turns me on and feeds my muse! Like it or dislike it, what about this art inspires your own art or creativity?   Contemporary American artist Bill Barminski challenges us with quietly ominous paintings that are derived from mass media imagery. These rich and textured works provoke reaction and encourage us to think again about the everyday items that we consume.

IDEA I LOVE

It’s not too late to get some hexie and appliqué work in before the rains of Autumn start pelting us.  These placemats will give you summer all year long (not that there’s anything wrong with that).  Plus, if you’re not an applique-hound or hexie queen, it will be a new technique for you to master!  Check it out . . .

IDEA I LOVE

OK, so you have bunions and toe fungus…this beauteous glitter tattoo will still make you queen of summer – even if you never take off your shoes!   Fine!  Put it on your arm or the back of your shoulder!   It tells the world how hip you are and what a fashion plate.  You have about  40 days of summer weather left.  Glitter and be gay! Here’s how you glitterize your temporary tattoo . . .

IDEA I LOVE

This is a total unapologetic Ikea hack, but it doesn’t need to be.  If your baskets don’t have a lid, make a lid from foam-core (at art supply stores — Walmart may even carry it. Michael’s does), paint it a color to match your threads, and start wrapping.  Who’s gonna be the wiser?   Here’s how you do it . . .

SOUTHWEST TURKEY BURGERS

Ingredients

8 slices turkey bacon or turkey bacon with black pepper or applewood smoked bacon

1 1/3 pounds ground turkey breast, the average weight of 1 package

2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 large shallot or 1/4 red onion, finely chopped

2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme leaves or 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves

2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves, optional – parsley may be substituted

1/2 small bell pepper, green, red or yellow, seeded and finely chopped

1 serrano or jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped

2 teaspoons, 2/3 palm full, ground cumin

1 to 2 teaspoons cayenne hot sauce, several drops (recommended: Tabasco)

2 teaspoons grill seasoning blend (recommended: Montreal Steak Seasoning by McCormick)

Vegetable oil or olive oil, for drizzling

1/2 pound deli sliced pepper jack cheese

4 crusty kaiser rolls, split

1 cup sweet red pepper relish, found on condiment aisle – pepper jelly may be substituted

Red leaf lettuce

Spicy O-nuts, recipe follows

Directions

Chop your garlic and veggies.

Cook bacon in a large nonstick skillet over medium high heat until crisp. Wipe excess grease from pan and return skillet to heat.

While bacon cooks, combine turkey meat, garlic, shallot or onion, thyme, cilantro or parsley, bell pepper, serrano or jalapeno pepper, cumin, hot pepper sauce, grill seasoning or salt and pepper. Divide mixture into 4 equal mounds then form meat into patties. Drizzle patties with vegetable oil to coat. Cook in skillet over medium high heat for 5 to 6 minutes on each side. Place sliced cheese over the patties in the last 2 minutes of cooking, use 1 or 2 slices for each patty, as you like.

Pile cooked cheeseburgers into buns. Spread sweet relish or jelly on bun tops and set red leaf lettuce into place, using the relish or jelly as glue. Top cheeseburgers with 2 slices of cooked, crisp bacon or turkey bacon and lettuce. Then serve with tortilla chips, tossed salad and/or spicy o-nuts.

WORDS TO LIVE BY

PATCHWORK, BABY!

Ice Ice Baby (who can forget that catchy lyric?)  This faux snowflake quilt called, Blueberry Ice,  would be perfect to start now so you can hand quilt it through the fall — lots of quilting space to play, right?   Imagine how in awe your friends and family will be when this simple magazine quilt becomes a slow-stitching heirloom!  Here’s the pattern . . .

IDEA I LOVE!

Now THIS is a craft that speaks to me.  Ceramic Affirmation plates give us double-duty wonderment.  First, it forces us to find positive affirmations that we can relate to, or need.  Then, it allows us our own creative expression in paint, script, and design.  If you read the article, you’ll see that the creator of this idea made one Affirmation Plate a day — FOR A YEAR!  She had to be a hawt mess!  Not even I, the king of shitty and self-destructive thinking, need that many affirmations! I love these!  LOVE!   Anywho . . . . try it here . . . .

MUST HAVE!

I just read that Martha Stewart bought and uses a drone and she’s even been in the big house (now she can help her old bunkies plan their escape route).  I want a drone, too.  I have no idea what I would actually do with one.  How many photos of my roof does one need?  Maybe I need some bunkies to help?  I’ll work on it.  Now, if Martha has one, it must be a good thing and anything Martha has/says/does, I have to have/say/do, too.  About $1400.00

DESSERT!

Raspberry Dessert Empanadas with Orange Drizzle

Cookie dough:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup butter, softened

1 teaspoon finely grated orange peel

1/8 teaspoon salt

1 package (3 ounces) cream cheese, softened

1/4 cup raspberry preserves

Orange glaze for drizzling:

1 cup powdered sugar

1 teaspoon finely grated orange peel

2 tablespoons orange juice

1. Thoroughly mix flour, butter, orange peel, salt, and cream cheese.  Cover dough and refrigerate for an hour.

2. Heat oven to 375 degrees.  Roll dough 1/8th of an inch thick on a floured surface.

3. Cut dough into 2 1/2 inch circles.  Spoon 1/2 teaspoon raspberry preserves onto each circle.  Wet the edge of each circle and fold dough in half over the preserves.  Seal edges with a fork.

4. Place cookies one inch apart on a greased cookie sheet.  Bake 8-10 minutes or until edges turn light brown.  Remove from cookie sheet immediately and let cool completely.

5. Mix orange glaze ingredients and pour into Ziploc bag.  Cut a small hole in one corner of bag and drizzle glaze over cookies.

IDEA I LOVE

What a pretty mat to knit.  I use a towel (you know, it’s a manly thing not to knit your own bath mat), but you….YOU, CUPCAKE,  can pour yarn all over your room and let it slip, stitch by stitch, through your fingers until you can have a loopy bath mat the size of  Giant’s Stadium.   Here’s the pattern . . .
