Katie LaClair
About Katie…
Katie is a mixed media artist currently living and working in Syracuse, New York. She works primarily with papers, paints, stamps, and thread in an intuitive and playful way. Katie is passionate about the process of making art as it provides her with an uncensored release that allows her to explore her life in a visual way. Formerly a Teaching Artist at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan, Katie is also greatly inspired by the in the moment art making process of children.
On today’s Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski, Katie and I discuss the ideas and techniques behind collage and mixed media art, why it’s important to stay true to your own creative process and not compare your work to that of other artists, are all untrained artists creating outsider art, why money is not the measure of success to an artist, and why an Etsy store?

About Gemma…
I come from a family of crafters, as long as I remember I have been around textiles. I’ve always been able to sew and enjoyed making my own patterns, but it wasn’t until a particularly difficult period in my life that I found my passion for quilting. I have only been quilting for two years, yet I find it hard to believe that I never knew this great obsession before! The process of design, colour play, piecing and quilting gives me great peace, passion and satisfaction. As a professional longarm quilter I enjoy quilting for others, but my true passion is designing original quilts and quilting them. With three young children, a part-time job, teaching commitments and my own business, balance is something that I am constantly seeking. 2014 has been an exciting year with a move back to Australia (after 3 years in the South Pacific), returning to my day job after 8 years off, starting a longarm quilting business and opportunities to work with great designers such as Jennifer Sampou and Sarah Jane. I’ve just booked my flights for QuiltCon 2015 in Austin and I’m super excited about my first trip to the USA and the chance to meet some quilting heros and friends!
On today’s Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski, Gemma and I talk about her visceral need to quilt, the process from patterns to designing your own quilt designs, the Australian quilting community and atmosphere, how a website can help your creative process and their importance in the global quilting community. We also discuss The Process Pledge . . . a new and fascinating idea that has come with the maturation of the Internet and the art/crafts community.

About Jane and Stephanie…
Jane Patrick has been in the weaving and the textile art field for nearly 40 years. She first learned to weave in 1971 when she was an exchange student in Iceland. Between 1981 and 1992 she was an editor at Interweave Press where she was editor of HANDWOVEN magazine, books, and Design Collections. Jane is an ardent enthusiast of the textile arts with interests in both contemporary and traditional work. Her articles and projects have been published in Handwoven, Spin-Off, Yarn Market News, Craft magazine Te, and Vav. She is the author of Time to Weave (Interweave Press) and The Weaver’s Idea Book: Creative cloth on a rigid heddle loom (Interweave Press). Her recent book: Woven Scarves: 26 Inspired Designs for the Rigid Heddle Loom was co-authored with Stephanie Flynn Sokolov. Another book, co-authored with Sara Goldenberg White will be released by Interweave Press in 2015. Jane has appeared in two videos, also published by Interweave Press: Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom and Inkle Weaving from A to Z. Jane has lectured and given workshops and classes for weaving guilds and conferences. Her area of interest is the rigid heddle and inkle loom. She is currently Creative Director for Schacht Spindle Co., Inc. located in Boulder, Colorado.
Stephanie Flynn Sokolov is a fiber fanatic experienced in teaching and motivating students in many fiber arts. She has a diverse expert background including spinning, weaving, knitting, felting, and dying. Her interest in learning about fiber arts started at a very young age, she trained in Accessory Design at the Fashion Institute Of Technology, and continues expanding her expertise by seeking out the best in the industry. She co-authored Woven Scarves: 26 Inspired Designs on a Rigid Heddle as seen on Knitting Daily TV and Stephanie’s projects can be found in Spin-Off Magazine and The Weaver’s Idea book by Jane Patrick. She also Co-authors Yearning to Weave and Spin (a Schacht Spindle publication). All students are sure to find inspiration in any class she teaches. She loves to spread her contagious enthusiasm for spinning with everyone she meets, and is so fun to be around!

Explore and practice weaving techniques for fabulous scarves!
Woven Scarves offers a collection of twenty-six scarves and variations that range in difficulty from advanced beginner to very complex. In highly approachable ways, authors Jane Patrick and Stephanie Flynn Sokolov introduce new weavers to a broad sampling of weaving techniques, exploring various ways of creating cloth on a rigid heddle loom. Weavers learn how to create lovely scarves that are creative, classic, and fun to make and wear. Using various weave structures, color, yarn combinations, and techniques such as felting and embellishment, the authors take you through the basics to a jumping-off point for personal exploration and creation.
Woven Scarves will support new weavers in their desire for appropriate patterns and better skills as well as a deeper understanding of fibers, types of weave techniques, and all the varieties of fabrics that are possible—even to beginners.
