SHELBY ALLAHO

It’s All About Shelby. . .

After two less-than-stellar attempts at home economics in 7th and 9th grades, Stephanie’s talented mom probably feared that the creative gene had skipped a generation. Stephanie preferred playing softball and running track.

Fast-forward to the early 1990s and Stephanie was married with two small children, living in Japan and needing Halloween costumes. She finally learned to sew and discovered a newfound love for quilting. She learned the sewing basics, and then took the first quilting class offered at the military base’s recreation center.

A decade later, Stephanie was living in Pickerington, Ohio; her kids were in college and she learned about Etsy and blogs from her daughter. With her daughter’s encouragement and help, she set up Loft Creations and started selling handmade items.

Stephanie’s style is an eclectic mix, and she’s a proud lover of buttons, polka dots, and all things tea. She’s lucky to have the support of her family and friends. Happiness to her is sipping tea and sewing with her dear dog, Abby, by her side. Through her sewing journey, Stephanie has learned that handmade is best!

Whether you have kids or are a kid at heart, you’ll love making the fun and kid-stylish projects featured inCrocheting Clothes Kids Love. This easy-to-use book features twenty-eight designs for garments and accessories for school-age kids.. Projects include: sweaters, vests, a capelet, dress, skirt, tank top, and slippers in styles kids are certain to love. Crocheting Clothes Kids Love also includes patterns for accessories, such as: hats, scarves, mittens, wristers, hair bands, jewelry, leg warmers, a backpack, belt, and messenger bag. Creative, fun photography by Nancy Langdon, who also co-authored and photographed Sewing Clothes Kids Love and photographed Knitting Clothes Kids Love shows kids wearing and using the projects to give you added inspiration. All projects are designed using a variety of yarn types in fibers that are easy to care for. Yarns used represent selections from both LYS and big box brands, with generic descriptions, gauge and hook sizes to allow you to easily substitute comparable yarn. New to crochet? No worries. General crochet instructions are provided to make it easy for new crocheters to follow along.

On this broadcast of Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski, Shelby talks with me about the fiber and design opportunities of her hometown, Kuwait!  We talk about how she and her writing partner and co-author, Ellen Gormley (who lives in Ohio) met and collaborated.  Shelby also shares three of the most important things to consider when designing a line of children’s clothing, how she recognizes a trend and then jumps on it, and the best fibers to crochet with when crocheting for children.

Here is a sampling of just some of Shelby and Ellen’s projects from their book, Crocheting Clothes Kids Love:

Geneviève Crabe

All About Geneviève…

Art has always been part of Genevieve Crabe’s life in one form or another. Her mother was an artist and always encouraged her artistic endeavors, which have included drawing, crochet, needlepoint, painting, pen & ink, and beading. Always looking for ways to integrate several of these art forms together, she has a strong affinity to using painting and fibers in jewelry making. Following a 30-year career in high-tech, Genevi\u00e8ve is now devoting all her time to artistic pursuits and expanding her arts & crafts business by publishing patterns and kits. She has written two books: Macintosh Graphics Techniques for Multimedia and The Crafters’ Internet Handbook: Research, Connect and Sell Your Crafts Online, which is now a blog, Crafters’ Internet 2.0. Genevi\u00e8ve is a Certified Zentangle Teacher™; and a member of Decorative Artists in Canada, the Society of Decorative Painters, the Toronto Bead Society, and the St. Thomas Elgin Artists Guild. http://www.amarylliscreations.com

On this broadcast of Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski, Genevieve talks with me about  The obstacles she faced moving from a very corporate occupation to a very creative profession,  Why she thinks crafts like beading go in and out of fashion,  and how she envisions the readers of her book using it to their best creative advantage.

If you’ve ever had the need to bead, this is the book for you. How to Make 100 Bead Embroidery Motifsis a visual showcase of 100 different motifs, organized in sections by design category, including: floral/botanical, abstract, geometric, and symbolic. Presented with easy-to-follow photography and stitch diagrams, this book will introduce new beaders to the world of bead embroidery, while also being a great reference for experts.

How to Make 100 Bead Embroidery Motifs includes an introductory section on materials and techniques,  followed by information about different stitches used in the motifs to secure beads to fabric, including methods for single beads, beads in a row, stacked designs, fringes, and more. It also discusses types of beads, needles, and beading threads.

You’ll be able to easily see the bead placement of each motif thanks to the enlarged photos, while the material lists provide the type, color, and number of beads needed for each project, as well as any other necessary materials or tools. Step-by-step directions and diagrams will walk you through the order in which to embroidery the beads and the types of stitches to use.

Any of the bead motifs can be used as single beaded images on fabric or as part of an overall beaded fabric design. You can embroider the motifs on garments, fashion accessories, quilts, or gifts or convert them into jewelry pieces. Whether you’re new to beading or a beading expert, this book is packed with inspiration and technical instruction for every bead enthusiast.

Here is a sampling of just some of Genevieve’s quilts from her book, How to Make 100 Bead Embroidery Motifs:

Quilt Designer, Author, Teacher

GRETCHEN GIBBONS

Gabbing about Gretchen …

Gretchen Gibbons began quilting in 1984, and she’s been passionate about quiltmaking ever since. She is the owner of Celebration of Life Designs, a pattern company. In 2008, her “Pennies from Heaven” quilt was selected for the juried Country Living Classics exhibit sponsored by the International Quilt Festival and Country Living magazine. In 2010, her “My Enchanted Garden” quilt won first place in the embellishments category in the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza and was selected to compete in the 2011 AQS Quilt Show. Her quilts have been featured in Easy Quilts and Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, volume 6.

On today’s Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski, I get a chance to talk with Gretchen  about mixing cotton and wool fibers in one quilt project and the benefits of doing so. The difference between appliqué techniques with wool versus cotton, and the types of wool to use.

This inspiring sketchbook is part of the new 20 Ways series from Quarry Books, designed to offer artists, designers, and doodlers a fun and sophisticated collection of illustration fun. Each spread features 20 inspiring illustrated examples of 45 themes–tulips, roses, dahlias, and much, much more–over 900 drawings, with blank space for you to draw your take on 20 Ways to Draw a Tulip.

This is not a step-by-step technique book–rather, the stylized flowers, snap dragons, and zinnias, are simplified, modernized, and reduced to the most basic elements, showing you how simple abstract shapes and forms meld to create the building blocks of any item that you want to draw. Each of the 20 interpretations provides a different, interesting approach to drawing a single item, providing loads of inspiration for your own drawing. Presented in the author’s uniquely creative style, this engaging and motivational practice book provides a new take on the world of sketching, doodling, and designing.

Get out your favorite drawing tool, and remember, there are not just 20 Ways to Draw a Tulip!

On today’s Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski, I get a chance to talk with Lisa Congdon about her latest book, 20 Ways to Draw a Tulip and 44 Other Fabulous Flowers.  Lisa also discusses why non-artists need this book how how they can use it with their creative medium — whether it be fabric, clay, thread, journaling, etc.

Bask in beautiful designs from Gretchen Gibbons. This captivating collection features “My Enchanted Garden”–blue-ribbon winner for “Best Use of Embellishment” in the 2009 Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza.

Stitch the breathtaking main quilt plus eight stand-alone projects–several of which echo its eye-catching design–for a total of nine unique artistic creations

Decorate and accessorize with nature-inspired appliqué patterns for wall hangings, pillows, and a purse that are distinctive yet easy to make

Mix cotton and wool to give your projects added depth, richness, and contrast in texture and color
