MEET TODAY’S GUESTS

Meet

 Quilt Designers and Authors

CAROL GILHAM JONES & BOBBI FINLEY

About Carol and Bobbi…

Carol Gilham Jones lives in Lawrence, Kansas, with her sweetheart, Charles, and their dogs, Sumo and Grace. Bobbi Finley Lives in San Jose, California, with Her Cat, Thomas, near her son and  daughter-in-law, Todd and Kimberly.  Bobbi and Carol have the good fortune of meeting at a San Francisco Bay Area quilting retreat in 1990. The friendship the grew out of they are meeting soon included working together on quilts, despite their geographic distance. After collaborating on many quilt projects over the years, they wrote their first book together, Tile Quilt Revival: Reinventing a Forgotten Form, which was published by C&T Publishing in 2010. And now, reinventing again, they offer this book, their latest collaboration

Bobbi is pleased to have one of her quilts in the collection of the American Museum of Folk Art in New York and feels fortunate that her quilts, have been recognized in books and exhibits. Her love for exploring the history of quilts and their makers have led her to actively participate in the American Quilt Study Group, serving as a board member and former coordinator of this study quilt exhibits.

Carol’s quilts have twice appeared on the cover of the magazine Quilters Newsletter and in many other publications, including Judy Warren Blaydon’s Collage+Cloth = Quilt, published by C & T publishing in 2010. In 2004 and 2005, a quilt Carol made with Bobbi and Georgann Eglinski travel throughout Japan in the exhibition Japanese Imagery in 100 Quilts, which featured the work of 75 artists from Japan and 25 from other countries.

On today’s Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski, I get a chance to talk with these two talented women about their reinventing 18 classic quilts from that International Quilt Study Center & Museum and their book, Fresh Perspectives, published by C&T Publishing.

You’ll love these contemporary interpretations of antique quilts from the International Quilt Study Center. Bobbi Finley and Carol Gillham Jones pored through the museum’s collection to find inspiration quilts for their latest project designs, ranging from simply functional to delightfully pictorial. These projects show off a remarkable array of styles, settings, and colorways—each adaptation uniquely mirrors the essential qualities of each quilt. Celebrate our rich quilt heritage by making these projects using various techniques like appliqué or improvisational piecing with traditional blocks. Plus you’ll learn how to approach designing an artistic spin on your own antique treasures.

Here is a sampling of just some of the quilt projects from Carol and Bobbi’s book:

Editor, Writer, Mixed-Media Master

CATE COULACOS PRATO

About Cate…

Cate says, “A lifelong writer and editor, I’ve been with Cloth Paper Scissors since its debut in 2004. I’m editor of Cloth Paper Scissors Studios and Online Editor for Quilting Daily.

My book, Mixed-Media Self-Portraits, Inspiration & Techniques (Interweave), was published in 2008 and I dabble in an ever-widening variety of art media, primarily fabric collage and embroidery.  I live with my husband, two teenage daughters, and various pets in an antique home in central Massachusetts. I brake for vintage fabrics and linens, and the occasional roadside table and chair.”

On today’s Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski,  Cate and I chat about the nagging self doubt that creative people and artists are plagued by and how to stop doubt in its tracks!

Of course you’ve seen the wondrous mags Cate mentioned…right?

And definitely don’t miss Cate’s books…

Beading Designer, Author, Crafter

AMY KOPPERUDE

Chasing Amy…

Amy grew up in rural Minnesota and began a life of crafting with a box of leftover fabric scraps, wallpaper samples, ribbon, buttons, and unwanted notions. She entered her teens with a passion for drawing, her college years with a passion for sewing, and her early thirties with a passion for beading. Today, she loves to experiment with all media–learning to paint, solder jewelry, and more. She loves to brainstorm ideas for more creative projects and books.

Create 23 cute and clever bugs and little crawly critters out of beads, wire, and other craft materials with Amy’s new book,  Bead Bugs! Each project is shown in step-by-step photos with clear instructions that anyone can follow. Variations of each project encourage the crafter to imagine all kinds of ways to make the bugs unique. Bead bugs and critters can be used in various ways—as ornaments, put on display, made into jewelry, made into mobiles, displayed in a terrarium, or framed in shadow boxes.

On today’s Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski, I get a chance to talk with Amy Kopperude about her new book, Bead Bugs: Cute, Creepy, and Quirky Projects to Make with Beads, Wire, and Fun Found Objects.

Here are just a few projects from Amy Kopperude’s book, BEAD BUGS:

Stick Insect Hat Pin

Honey Bee Tea Infuser

Picnic Ant Magnets

Fly Tie Tack

Scorpion Sand Garden
