LOS ANGELES, LA—(Marketwired – Oct 5, 2015) – Julie Nimoy, the daughter of the late actor Leonard Nimoy, announced today that she is producing a new documentary film with her husband David Knight of Health Point Productions on the subject of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

“After my dad's untimely passing due to complications related to COPD, my husband and I committed ourselves to continuing his mission and his message.”

“The production team is honored to be contributing our time to make this project a reality,” said co–producer David Knight. “And we're offering an opportunity for Star Trek fans and people from around–the–world concerned with COPD to show their support through our crowd funding campaign. Along with the COPD Foundation, we've set up a donation site http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/COPDFilm/Nimoy for anyone who wishes to support our project. Ten percent of all donated funds will be directed toward COPD research.”

“We are very pleased to hear about this documentary as a tribute for Mr. Nimoy,” said John Walsh, COPD Foundation President and Co–Founder. “We are confident it can play a role in raising awareness for COPD, so that many others can be helped.”

Many sponsors have been drawn to this project as fans of Star Trek but some have connected with Mr. Nimoy through his battle with COPD. ”When we heard about the film that Julie Nimoy and her husband David Knight are working on to spread COPD awareness, we knew we had to be a part of it. Leonard Nimoy was a member of the 1st Class Medical family for a long time and his mission of spreading awareness and working to improve the quality of life of COPD patients is one that we have shared. We are very excited and proud to help make Mr. Nimoy's legacy a reality in getting his message out,” said Caleb Umstead, Owner and Operator of 1st Class Medical.

Leonard Nimoy, who was best known as the character Spock in the TV and movie series “Star Trek,” died February 27, 2015 from complications associated with COPD. Diagnosed in 2013, Leonard took to social and traditional media to bring this common, but often under–diagnosed disease, to light. In his last interviews and through Twitter, he reached out to educate his fans about his condition and encouraged people to quit smoking.

COPD: Highly Illogical will be narrated by our favorite member of the Q Continuum John De Lancie. The film will showcase the latest advances in the fight against Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, using state–of–the–art computer–generated imagery that promises to show the audience a spectacular view from inside the body. Lawrence Kiey, CEO and Co–Founder of BioLucid, said, “We are very honored and pleased to be working with the Nimoy family to help raise awareness and understanding of COPD in a way that has never been done before. It will be a voyage, just as Leonard, or Spock, would have wanted.”

In the United States, COPD is the third–leading cause of death, and it affects an estimated 30 million people. Like Leonard, who was diagnosed late in life, as many as 15 million Americans might have COPD and are unaware of it.

We invite you to support this meaningful project. Please join us and shed light on COPD — a disease that affects so many people we know and love.
