RANDERS, Denmark, March 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ —

– Has the classic car world gone mad? Everyone witnessing the February rush for the Baillon-collection in Paris might be forgiven for thinking so: Dents, dust and rust in no small measures attracted absolute record prices and not least record interest from the public. A highly unscientific Danish comparative study now confirms the trend: Barnfinds beats restored cars.

It certainly seems that barnfind has golden days, as shown by a rather unscientific but very real comparative study in Denmark: The auction house; Campen Auktioner A/S recently announced two separate collections both coming up for sale on March 29, 2015 spring sale. One collection was a classic barnfind with more or less dilapidated cars while the other collection consisted of twelve perfectly preserved classics cars.

Both collections were instantaneously posted with YouTube-teasers (see attached links) and the auction house were quite surprised by the fact that barnfind attracted far more interest compared than the top-tuned car collection.

Or shouldn’t we be so surprised at all? Is this in fact just what the classic car world is about: Romance above all? Dreams before reality? The psychological mechanism involved here could very well be worth a more thorough study, as it certainly seems as though the cars themselves are not the main attraction at all.

Both car collections were separately assembled over decades by two crafty Danish businesspersons. Both left public schools after just 7 years to become very successful self-made millionaires and they both just happened to be eager car enthusiasts as well. What separates the two collectors is how they maintained their car fleet.

The first car collector, the now 86-year-old “Cookie King” Poul Spangsberg was the most successful of the two in financial terms (yes, he made his fortune with cookies) At the peak of his success he employed 404 people, when he was the owner of karenvolf.dk – now sold to bisca.co.uk. On the side Poul Spangsberg built a large collection of 57 cars from Porsche to Packard. He housed his car collection in fine temperature controlled buildings, and employed an associated mechanic for proper maintenance.

The other car collector, the now 77-year-old Niels Peter Lübeck was the former owner of Scan-agro A/S which was a large machinery business in the city of Hadsund, Jutland. However, Niels Peter Lübeck traded in everything from agricultural equipment to aeroplanes, collecting the odd car along the way but really being too busy flying and buying to do much of anything with his car collection. Instead, he tucked his vehicles away in barns for better times, but unfortunately he fell ill and now he has decided to sell his collection of cars, tractors and farm machinery.

Of course, the appropriately stored and cared for cars by the Cookie King are in mint condition, viewed in every traditional meaning of the word. However, as it turns out, more people are enthused by the story of romance and hope and long love lying underneath a thick layer of dust of the barnfind the auction house reports.

Adding to the media rush and dust around the barnfind since it directed much attention to the auction itself and thus the auction house managed to attract even more good solid cars for sale – perhaps mostly of interest for the sober and judiciously thinking fraction amongst the classic car enthusiasts. Who are maybe of recent becoming a minority group. Now we are all just excited to see if the Barnfinds beats restored cars under the hammer.
