ORDER OF SERVICE – WS  SETTING ONE

USED FOR SUNDAYS IN FEBRUARY 2014

Opening Prayer

P:O God, our Father, Your praise is from those whom You have called from darkness to faith in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins. Uplift our souls to the holiness of Your presence, that with pure hearts we may adore Your name and worship You with joy on our lips, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Redeemer and Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

Opening Hymn 9: 1-4

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

ALL SING: Amen.

Confession and Absolution

P: Beloved of God: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

ALL: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we confess that we are sinful by nature, and have sinned against You in our thoughts, words, and actions.  We have not loved You above all things.  We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  Have mercy on us, and for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive us our sins.

P:

God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given His only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.  Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

ALL SING: Amen.

The Service of the Word

ALL SING: Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us.  Lord, have mercy on us. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to all people on earth.  Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father: We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.  Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God: You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.  You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer.  For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

P: Let us pray. O Lord, we beseech You to keep Your Church and household continually in Your truth, that those who lean only on the hope of Your heavenly grace may evermore be defended by Your mighty power; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever.

ALL SING: Amen.

Scripture Reading – New Testament Gospel – John 4

Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well near Sychar

1 Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples), 3 He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4 But He needed to go through Samaria. 5 So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” 15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.” 19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.” 27 And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why are You talking with her?” 28 The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29 “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” 30 Then they went out of the city and came to Him. 31 In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” 33 Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! 36 And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.” 39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own word. 42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.” 43 Now after the two days He departed from there and went to Galilee. 44 For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they also had gone to the feast. 46 So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.” 49 The nobleman said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies!” 50 Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. 51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, “Your son lives!” 52 Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household. 54 This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.

P: Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it! Alleluia!

ALL SING: Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Alleluia!  These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.   Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

CONFESSION OF FAITH – THE APOSTLES’ CREED

ALL: I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven And is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting.  Amen.

ALL SING: Create in me a clean heart, O God.  Renew a right spirit within me.  Cast me not away from Your presence. Take not Your Holy Spirit from me.  Restore to me the joy of Your salvation.  Uphold me with Your free Spirit.

Hymn 499

The Offering is collected – sing Hymn 442:2

– as printed here –

Grant us hearts, dear Lord, to yield Thee

Gladly, freely, of Thine own; With the sunshine of Thy goodness

Melt our thankless hearts of stone Till our cold and selfish natures,

Warmed by Thee, at length believe

That more happy and more blessed ‘Tis to give than to receive.

CREATION / EVOLUTION DEBATE

This last Tuesday there was a live-feed debate between Ken Ham (of Answers in Genesis/Creation Museum) and Bill Nye (“the Science Guy”).  Those who have already watched it found it to be very informative.  You are welcome to view it online yourselves! (We are also hoping to get a DVD copy of it for our library.)  Go to http://debatelive.org/ where you will find the debate.  The debate itself is well over 2 hours long.  Retired Prof Clifford Kuehne also reports that there was a follow up interview done with Ken Ham which is also worthwhile.  That can be found on youtube at “Post-Debate answers Live w/ Ken Ham” – the interview is about 40 minutes in length.

YOU CAN’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER

The following observations come from Pastor Nathanael Mayhew’s online journal on his most recent trip to Africa….

Wednesday – November 13, 2013

Over the last two days I have been in Makanya where the CLC Tanzania General Pastoral Conference has been held. Prior to this pastors from both Kenya and Tanzania have met together (with men from Zambia, Uganda, and the Congo also joining). This year, because of the division of the work in East Africa (Mike Gurath is serving Uganda and Kenya and I am working in Tanzania), we had to reorganize our Pastoral Conference and re-elect leaders to serve our conference in the coming years. Our studies focused again on the Augsburg Confession and Articles 3 (The person and work of Christ) and 4 (Justification). It was a very rewarding conference and many of the men again expressed their joy and appreciation for the CLC hosting and leading the Conference.

An interesting comment was made last night as we all gathered around the “goat feast” for the evening meal last night. One pastor said: “We like it when you come alone. We feel closer to you when you are here alone.” I had never really thought about that before. Have I, when I have come with others, given the impression that I don’t want to be around my African brethren, or that I would rather spend time with my American comrade(s)? This year was different, and I did become closer to several of the men that I spent extra time with.

I didn’t want to believe that it was true, but in reality there probably was some truth there. I’ve noticed when I’m on the bus or walking down the street that I feel that I have a connection with someone who has light skin like me. I’m at times more inclined to start a conversation with a person who looks like me, than someone who has dark skin. But do you know what is so ironic? Just because a person has lighter skin doesn’t make them any more like me than someone with dark skin! Sometimes I can’t even communicate with them, because they speak a different language (Italian, French, Dutch are among the ones I have met). Even if you can communicate with them you usually find out that your ideologies are completely different. This may also be true of many Africans, but the point is that it is not the color of our skin that makes us similar or different. I have come to realize (again) that I have much more in common with my African brethren than I do with the average “mzungu” (Swahili for “white person”), both here and back in the United States.  It just goes to show: “You can’t judge a book by it’s cover!”  What valuable relationships have you missed out on because you too judged the book by it’s cover?

BLESSINGS ON YOUR BIRTHDAY!
