About Movie Dishoom
As an action adventure film and a remake of the 2015 Malayalam flick, “Mumbai Police”, Dishoom is based in the Middle East and is an all-cop flick. Two top cops from either side of the Arabian Sea team up for a 36-hour man hunt, searching for India’s top batsman who goes missing in the Middle East. Dishoom is an action-packed thriller and is loaded with lots of stunts. With first-of-their-kind bike stunts, Dishoom is definitely going to impress bike lovers and adrenaline junkies. While Varun Dhawan, John Abraham and Jacqueline Fernandez play the lead roles, Akshaye Khanna can be seen playing the role of an antagonist. Primarily an action-packed chase drama, comedy scenes in the film are thrown in for good measure.
Plot
The story of Dishoom revolves around Viraj, a star batsman in the Indian cricket team, who goes missing for the final match between India and Pakistan. Both, Kabir Shergill (played by John Abraham) and Junaid Ansari (played by Varun Dhawan), hailing from a Special Task Force team, go on their mission to find Viraj (played by Saqib Saleem), who has been kidnapped by Rahul Wagah (played by Akshaye Khanna).
Performances
What’s been a high point of the slightly pacy film is its screenplay and some short cameos, such as that of Akshay Kumar, Nargis Fakhri and Vijay Raaz. What’s also been lauded is the entertainer that Varun Dhawan is – never a dull moment when he’s on screen – amid tightly chereographed and neatly edited action sequences using West Asia’s beautiful locales in the backdrop. Typical charaterisations come to fore in the film whose plot is wafer-thin, lacks originality and is somewhat cliched. John Abraham (Kabir), Varun Dhawan (Junaid) and Jacquelin Fernandez (Ishika) have a few bright moments and overall contribute to the action-adventure genre of the film rather predictably. It fails to zip-zap-zoom, really.
Dishoom Music
Loaded with songs that are bound to rule the dance floor, the music album of Dishoom has received an excellent response from the music lovers. The opening track “Sau Tarah Ke” is a catchy number and has the peppy vocals of Jonita Gandhi and Amit Mishra. The song comes in two different versions and the second one has been beautifully sung by Abhijeet Sawant and Aditi Singh Sharma. The song is going to become an instant hit in discotheques.
Next is “Toh Dishoom” which is a Punjabi number superbly sung by Raftaar and Shahid Mallya. With a slight resemblance to the title track of ‘Desi Boys’, “Toh Dishoom” would grab the listener’s attention for a longer time.
Then there is the much-talked about item song featuring Parineeti Chopra and Varun Dhawan. Well, the track has nothing special to offer and has common beats. Like “Sau Tarah Ke”, this song has also been presented in two different versions with the second version sung by Antara Mitra and Nakash Aziz. Both the tracks have foot tapping beats and will become popular among the teens.
Next in-line is “Ishqa” which is an average composition and has been influenced by some prominent English tracks. With disappointing lyrics and boring music, the track fails in getting connected with the listeners.
Finally, Dishoom has the popular Desi Boyz song “Subah Hone Na De” in a remixed version. Singers of the original track have been roped in to sing this track as well, but amid the EDM beats. In my opinion, the original “Subah Hone Na De” is far better than this one.

What’s Good?
The film’s screenplay, modelled around the 1970s era is a beauty. The background score of the film is enjoyable, and so is Akhay Kumar’s never-seen-before avatar donning a man bun and much swagger. What’s indeed a surprise package is the comeback of Akshaye Khanna, the brawny bad guy who gives the protagonists a run for their money.
What’s Bad?
The writing of the film is loose and its action sloppy. Had it not been for a few foot-tapping numbers and well thought out star cameos – read Akshay Kumar’s show-stopping special appearance – the film would have had nary a bright moment.
Verdict
Failing to create a lasting impact, the 124-minute run time of the film is its only saving grace. Catch it if you must!
