Are you a Delhiite? Are you gearing up to get your child admitted to the Nursery section of one of your favourite schools? If your answer to both these questions is a ‘yes’, then there is a lot that you need to be aware of. With a huge disparity between the norms laid down for nursery admissions to the government and private schools in Delhi, you can’t afford to miss out on certain vital guidelines.

As an initiative to assist the guardians of children seeking admission to nursery schools, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government has launched a special helpline number 011-27352525. This helpline number would be monitored by the current Education Minister of Delhi, Mr. Manish Sisodia, and would facilitate direct contact with the concerned education officers in case of any kind of harassment like demand for donation, misbehaviour etc faced by the parents.

Here’s a look at the Nursery admission guidelines laid down by top private schools in Delhi:

a) Total number of seats available

While a total of 25% seats are reserved for the EWS (Economically Weaker Section)/Disadvantaged Group Category, the General category is allotted a total of 50% seats. An additional 5% seats are reserved under the Staff Quota. According to the new government ruling, the seats belonging to the management quota will be considered as open seats in all likelihood. Your child is eligible for a Nursery class admission in this academic  session only if he/she is born between 01/04/2012 and 31/03/2013 (both days inclusive).

b) Parameters/Criteria for admission under the General Category

The 100 points serving as the criterion for Nursery Admissions in the General category in Delhi’s private schools are:

1. Neighbourhood

-          A child residing within 0-1 KM distance from school receives 40 points.

-          A child residing within 1.1-3 KM distance from school receives 35 points.

-          A child residing within 3.1-6 KM distance from school receives 30 points.

-          A child residing within 6.1-8 KM distance from school receives 25 points.

-         A child residing within 8.1-1.5 KM distance from school receives 20 points.

That means a total of 40 points can be scored under the neighbourhood parameter.

2. Sibling

If you already have a son/daughter studying in the chosen school, then your yet-to-be-admitted child will receive 30 points right away.

3. Parent(Father/Mother) Alumni of School

A child whose father/mother has already studied in the chosen school is eligible for 10 points, individually for father and mother.

4. To a girl child who is also the first child, a total of 5 points will be awarded.

5. Child of a single parent (widow/widower/Divorced) receives a total of 5 points.

c) Parameters/Criteria for admission under the EWS (Economically Weaker Section) & Disadvantaged Group Category

All private unaided-recognised schools would follow the below criteria to offer admissions to Nursery section:

(i) Admission shall first be offered to eligible students belonging to EWS and Disadvantaged’ Group residing within 1 km of the specific school.

(ii) In case the vacancies remain unfilled, students residing within 3 km of the school shall be admitted.

(iii) If there are still vacancies, then the admission shall be offered to other students residing within 6 km of the institution.

(iv) Students residing beyond 6 km shall be admitted only in case vacancies remain unfilled even after considering all the students within the 6 km area.

d) Stepwise Admission Process

Step 1- You can either opt for the online or the hard-copy registration process. The dates for availability of online and hard-copy registration forms need to be checked on the official websites of different schools.

Step 2 - After filling up the registration forms for multiple schools, you’ll receive a call from the ones where your child’s name have been shortlisted after having scored higher value points/points above the cut-off. The details and schedule of the ‘General Category Nursery Admissions’ would be made available on the respective school’s website.

Step 3 - Both the parents have to be present for the admission regime. They need to submit self-attested copies of vital documents in addition to signing the letter of undertaking in the presence of the verification team.

Step 4 - The First of Provisionally Selected Children & Waitlisted Children is displayed on the school websites. On finding your child’s name within this list, you can proceed ahead to complete the other formalities like filling up the Admission Form, submission of original copies, verification of Original Certificates, medical formalities and fee deposit. Do note in case of any unfilled seats, the third, fourth and fifth list of Provisionally Selected Children is also declared by the school.

For getting admission to the nursery section of a government-aided Delhi school, your child should have completed 4 years as on 31st March 2016.
