It’s what you do in your free time that will set you free—or enslave you.

After a long 40+ hour work week, it can be tough to want to do anything other than lay on the couch, but, as author Jarod Kintz wise states, it’s in our free time that we truly have the opportunity to be free.

As with many other things in my life I decide how to use my free time using the rocking chair method: when I’m 80, sitting in my rocking chair and reflecting on the life I’ve lived, would I rather look back and see myself as:

Someone who worked, came home and then sat around at home, playing video games and watching TV.

OR

Someone who got out of the house, learned new skills, had new experiences, made new friends and memories and was just a generally awesome person.

Put in these terms, the decision of what to do with your free time becomes easy, right?

One of the best ways to works towards to achieving reflection #2 above is to pursue hobbies. There are countless hobbies you can choose from, so I put together a list of the best, most interesting, most incredibly fun hobbies for men to try.

1. Whittling

Whittling is an ancient form of wood carving and one of man’s oldest hobbies.

It’s fun and relaxing while at the same time being very challenging.

Making a beautiful whittled sculpture takes a lot of practice and even more patience. It’s an easy hobby to start, but a very difficult one to master.

To whittle your first piece of wood, all you need is a knife and, well, a piece of wood (just make sure it’s dry). If you find you enjoy the process, I recommend you buy a knife designed for whittling and types of wood that are better for whittling (like basswood).

Video of Whittling

The video is time lapse showing the possibilities of whittling.

You’ll see a man start with a blank piece of wood and end with a moving ball trapped inside of a hollow column.

2. Distilling

Imagine being able to produce your own unique scotch or bourbon.

Well, using distillation, you can produce alcohols all the way from whiskey to brandy.

There are three high level steps to distillation:

A liquid is heated until part of that liquid (like alcohol) becomes a gas and rises

The gas that rose in step one is then condensed back into liquid form

This condensed liquid is collected (giving you a distilled version of the liquid in step one)

Distilling an alcoholic beverage, like beer, turns it into a liquor taking the alcohol percentage from around 5% to 40%.

Fun Fact: Distilled beer is essentially whiskey.

Distilling is a versatile and fun hobby, but there is a small catch: by federal law, distilling alcohol at home is technically illegal.

Video of Distillation

Below you’ll see a couple of HUGE copper production stills used to distill scotch in Scotland.

3. Pool/Billiards

Pool is a highly competitive game of strategy, skill and often a bit of luck.

Somehow, with how competitive pool is, it’s actually a pretty relaxing game.

You can find tables at a pool hall, but I prefer playing in my local bars. In a bar, it’s a lot easier to find pickup games and they usually have beer.

Pool is a great game that’s easy to play, but very difficult to master.

Video of Pool/Billiards

If you’re not familiar with pool, take my word that the shots this guy is making are REALLY hard.

4. Spear Fishing

Spear fishing is very unlike traditional, cast your line and wait, fishing.

It turns you into an underwater hunter. You spot a fish, stalk it, line up your shot spear gun, then WOOSH (underwater shooting sound).

It’s equal parts challenging, exciting and rewarding.

Be sure to get a fishing license before you hit the water!

Video of Spear Fishing

Watch a pro spear fishing free dive 80 feet.

At the beginning of the video, you see the spear fisher free dive and then, about 1:40 in, you see him actually shoot his spear gun.

5. Martial Arts

I’m a big advocate of practicing martial arts for a lot of reasons. Martial arts are:

An incredible, full body workout.

Mentally stimulating. Many martial arts styles require a lot of strategy. As an example of this, and due to its strategic nature, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is often called “human chess”.

A highly practical skill. As a general rule of thumb, you should avoid a fight. If for some reason you can’t, you’ll be able to defend yourself with your martial art.

Awesome, tight knit communities. When you train with the same guys every day, literally putting your blood and sweat into it, you develop a sort of brotherhood. I haven’t found any other activities that can match the bond that’s developed in a martial arts studio.

If you’re not sure what martial art style to practice, check out our post on the 7 Most Effective Martial Arts for Self Defense.

6. Woodworking

There are few things manlier than shaping wood, into a usable form, with your hands and some tools

Imagine being able to turn a tree into a new piece furniture, like a chair or table, for your home.

If you learned woodworking, you’d be able to create almost anything, from a simple birdhouse, to a complex rocking chair.

What’s more, it can be easily be a hobby that makes you money.

Some popular woodworking careers are cabinetry and interior finishing. Both are highly specialized and, as a result, can be highly profitable.

Video of Woodworking

The video below shows what a woodworking master can do. This guy is ridiculously good and does everything without power tools.

If I dedicated the rest of my life to woodworking, I still don’t think I could make a rocking chair as nice as his.

7. Archery

The word archery comes from the Latin word arcus, meaning bow or arc.

The combination of bow and arrow, is a very primal and manly weapon. Archery fed families for centuries before we were able to walk into a store and buy food.

Archery’s ability to provide food through hunting makes it a very practical skill for modern men to have.

Consider a survival scenario like being lost in the woods. A trained archer would easily be able to survive by hunting game using his bow.

Starting is easy and relatively inexpensive. You can get all the supplies you need (bow, arrows and target) at your local sporting goods store and can practice in your backyard.

Archery is a lot fun and remains challenging as you improve your skills.

Video of Archery

As you become a better archer, you’ll find creative ways to challenge your skills.

A wonderful example of this is shooting at a lit candle and just hitting enough of the wick to put out the candle without knocking it over. Watch the below video to see this and other archery trick shots.

8. Infuse Alcohol

How does bacon flavored bourbon sound? What about apple cinnamon whiskey?

Both wonderful sounding whiskies are the product of alcohol infusing.

Infusing alcohol is probably the easiest activity to start on our list of hobbies. It requires minimal inputs and takes absolutely no experience.

To infuse an alcohol, just add an ingredient (like bacon) to your favorite liquor (like bourbon), seal the mixture in a container and wait a few days. That’s it. After you let the flavors combine for a few days, you’ll have an incredible tasting, infused alcohol like bacon bourbon.

Think about it like cooking for people who enjoy great tasting liquors.

Video of Infusing Alcohol

This video, from CHOW, shows just how simple it is to infuse alcohol.

9. Blacksmithing

Blacksmithing is the ancient art of forging metal into a usable form.

Back in medieval times, the blacksmith was the heart of a village.

They created the tools that were used to farm and grow food and the weapons that were used to protect the village.

Modern day blacksmiths still command a lot of respect, but mostly through producing custom metal pieces and fine art.

It’s a great hobby for men because, not only is it psychically demanding, but requires a combination of intellect, skill and creativity.

Video of Blacksmithing

Ever wondered how a sword is made?

In this video you’ll see two Japanese men forge a beautiful and deadly samurai sword from an ordinary piece of metal.

10. Hiking

Hiking is one of the best ways to experience nature’s beauty.

Many destinations in nature, like a mountain top or a lake deep within a forest, are only accessible if you hike, mountain bike or horseback ride to them.

Since these places are so difficult to access they’re also unspoiled and incredibly beautiful.

Hiking is a great workout and a great way to get in touch with nature.

It’s also a wonderful hobby for couples.

Video of Hiking

Remember, one of the few ways you’ll ever get to experience these INCREDIBLE views of Northern California’s Redwood Forest in person is by hiking!

11. Golf

Golf is fun, rewarding, addicting and, most of all, frustrating.

Its premise is simple: take a long, bent stick and hit a tiny ball into a tiny hole hundreds of yards away.

While this sounds impossible, with practice a LOT of patience, it’s a great sport.

More than any other sport or activity on our list of hobbies, I recommend your first step with golf is lessons.

Learning the mechanics to a proper golf swing will be the foundation on which your entire golf game is built.

A great thing about golf is that you can play it most of your life. It’s one of the best hobbies for men over 50 out there.

Video of Golf

The video below shows two guys who must have been able to golf before they were able to speak.

12. Whiskey/Wine Connoisseur

According to Merriam-Webster, a connoisseur is a person who “enjoys with discrimination and appreciation of subtleties.”‘

So to put this in terms of whiskey or wine, you’ll essentially be able to enjoy your favorite whiskey/wine with a deeper appreciate and understanding of its quality.

Using whiskey as an example, a connoisseur might taste earthy tones, a hint of cinnamon or maybe a floral note.

It’s a great hobby for men who already enjoy whiskey or wine and want to enjoy it a little more consciously.

What’s more, becoming a connoisseur is relatively easy, all you need is some whiskey or wine, a notebook and a little bit of know how.

If you’re interested in becoming a whiskey connoisseur, check out our Ultimate Guides to Scotch and our Introduction to Bourbon.

Video about Becoming a Whiskey/Wine Connoisseur

The below video is a great introduction on becoming a whiskey connoisseur.

13. Memory Improvement

I doubt you’ll find memory improvement on any other list of hobbies for men.

So why did it make ours?

If you read this blog, you’ll know we often publish articles on memory improvement. Recently, we’ve had an article on the Pythagoras memory technique and one on developing a photographic memory.

By improving your memory, you improve the rate at which you’re able to learn and retain information. The strength of your memory is the foundation of your intellect and your intelligence.

Improving your memory may not be the most fun hobby, but it’s hugely important for becoming a more intelligent man.

Video of Memory Improvement

This video shows the strength of a well-honed memory.

This man memorizes the order (suit and number) of a 52 card deck of playing cards in just over 21 seconds.

14. Skiing/Snowboarding

Skiing and snowboarding are without question winter’s most popular sport.

They’re undeniably fun and will give you a challenge regardless of whether you’re a beginner or a pro.

The main drawback to the sport is that it can be pretty expensive.

If you’re serious about getting into skiing or snowboarding, I highly recommend you buy a season pass and get your own gear (renting gear adds up really quickly).

If you have a few dollars to spare, definitely try this hobby. Charging down the slopes is obviously a rush, but it’s the constant challenge that makes the sport so interesting.

Video of Skiing/Snowboarding

This video, from Warren Miller, was filmed on locations across the world like California, Alaska, Norway and New Zealand. It shows some amazing (and extreme) snowboarding and skiing.

15. Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is one of the more extreme sports on our list of hobbies.

Not only is it an extreme sport, it’s also an extreme workout.

If you want to mountain bike down a hill, you have to ride up it first! What’s more, riding up rough mountain terrain is much more strenuous than riding up a nicely paved street.

Riding down the mountain, you can gain speed quickly. You couple this with uneven terrain and blind corners and you have yourself a pretty extreme sport.

Mountain biking is a lot of fun and, just like hiking, gets you to the parts of nature that are otherwise difficult to access.

Video of Mountain Biking

This video is of downhill mountain bike race. It very well illustrates the “extreme” nature of the sport.

16. Ceramics

Ceramics is a fun and hands-on art form.

Unlike painting or drawing, it allows you to create something three dimensional.

You can create almost anything from a simple birdhouse to a hand spun pot or candlestick.

My favorite form of ceramics is wheel throwing. In wheel throwing, you use a spinning wheel and your hands to slowly shape semi wet clay into objects like bowls or pots.

Kilns (what you use to dry and harden your masterpieces) can be expensive, so look for a local hobby center or ceramic/pottery studio. Many will let you dry you projects in their kiln for a fee.

Video of Ceramics/Pottery

Watch a master use a pottery wheel to quickly shape a fairly complex candle stick.

17. Offroading

Offroading is exactly what is sounds like it is: heading off of the paved road to navigate rough, rocky, uneven, muddy back roads.

The terrain you offroad on can be almost anything from river beds, sand dunes, mountain sides, boulders or even old, broken down roads.

It’s one of the most fun hobbies for men as it combines a lot of things that we love: cars, outdoors, challenge and even a little danger.

If you have a truck, jeep or SUV (with all terrain or mud tires) you can start offroading without spending much money. Just be sure to research the location you plan to offroad to ensure your vehicle can handle it.

When offroading, it’s a REALLY good idea to go with multiple cars. Chances are, you’ll get your car stuck and when you do, it’s nice to have friends who will help pull you out.

Video of Offroading

The video below shows some of the beautiful views and tough terrain you can find offroading.

18. Cooking

Cooking is fun, easy and instantly rewarding.

It’s an important hobby for men because it makes us self-sustaining. A true man doesn’t need a restaurant or significant other to feed himself; he just needs some fresh ingredients, a fire and some utensils.

When you’re first getting started, cook from recipes. They’ll teach you basic cooking skills and how the flavors of different ingredients work together.

For a lot of great recipes, check out this site.

Oh, and the best part about cooking? You get to eat whatever (hopefully) delicious dish you made.

19. Classic Car Restoration

Imagine taking a broken down, rusty old car sitting in a junk yard and restoring it to be the most beautiful car on the road.

Restoring a classic car takes a lot of time, and even more dedication, but is probably the most rewarding activity on this list of hobbies.

While it’s rewarding, it’s also one of the more difficult hobbies to start. Working on cars in any capacity takes a lot of knowledge and skill. You have to do work on the car’s body, engine, electrical system, transmission, etc., etc., etc.

If you’re really interested in classic car restoration, don’t be deterred by that last paragraph, but do be prepared to put in the time to properly learn the trade.

Video of Classic Car Restoration

The best way to see the potential of classic car restoration is to see the before and after pictures of a restored car.

Below, you’ll see the before and after pictures of a fully restored 1969 Chevy Camaro.

20. River Rafting/Kayaking

Rushing down the rapids on a raft or kayak is a ton of fun.

Successful rafting requires timing, endurance and good communication with your fellow raft members.

It’s difficult, exciting, tiring and, most of all, is a great way to enjoy the nature with the family or a group of friends.

Until you REALLY know what you’re doing, don’t hit the river without a reputable raft company. Rivers are unpredictable and dangerous and, as such, should be approached with caution.

The video below shows the more extreme side of river kayaking.

21. Fencing

Fencing is our modern day version of sword fighting.

It’s highly a competitive and strategic sport that’s an incredible work out.

There are two main types of fencing:

Classical Fencing

Sport (Olympic Style) Fencing

Classical fencing is designed to emulate an actual sword fight whereas sport fencing is more of a competitive sport.

Whichever you choose, fencing combines strategy, athleticism and technique making it a great hobby for men to try.

Alright, this video isn’t fully of fencing.

It’s the sword fighting scene in the Bond film Die Another Day. It starts out in a fencing gym so…

22. Reading

Reading is a classic hobby for men.

History’s smartest men from Franklin to Churchill were all avid readers. Why? Not only is reading really enjoyable, it has a list of positive benefits:

Builds your knowledge

Helps to alleviate stress

Provides mental stimulation

Expands your vocabulary

Improves your memory

And does a whole lot more for your brain

In many ways, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. It’s one of the best things you can do to improve your overall brain function.

This is a wonderful video that shows both the joys and fears of reading.

23. Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is a fun, exciting and nerve wracking sport.

While you’re of course anchored to the rock with ropes, you’re still climbing tens of feet above the ground and who really LIKES heights?

You can practice rock climbing both indoor and outdoor.

I strongly prefer outdoor climbing. You get to feel an actual rock under your fingers, the wind at your back and the sun on your face.

With that, when you’re getting started rock climbing, I recommend you go to an indoor gym. At a gym, not only can you rent climbing equipment, but you can climb under supervision and support of an experienced climber.

When you’re 25+ feet up in the air, a little support is a nice thing to have.

Video of Rock Climbing

The video below shows a man climbing (really high) above water without any ropes.

24. Flying

Ask ten people what superpower they want and at least seven of them would respond with “flying”.

What man doesn’t want to be able to soar through the sky like superman?

While modern technology has been slow to give us a jet pack or wing suit, you can still soar through the sky by flying a plane or helicopter.

Becoming a pilot is relatively easy. You need to log a set number of hours at a flight school, and then need to pass a written test and flying test.

Flying gives you the freedom to fly wherever you want, whenever you want. The world becomes a lot smaller with this power.

If you’re interested in flying, check out the FAA’s website for more information on getting your pilot’s license.

Where the kayakers from above were probably insane, Kirby Chambliss is 100% insane.

25. Maple-ing

Tapping a maple tree, to make syrup, is a wonderful hobby for men.

If you have access to the right type of trees (sugar maples), it’s an incredibly easy to start and has a great payoff (of maple syrup).

And really… Who doesn’t like maple syrup?

Video of Maple-ing

This video will give you a clear explanation on how to tap a maple tree.

It also talks about what exactly you’re taking from the tree and how to convert this to maple syrup.

26. Smoke Meats

Smoking is a unique way to grill food. You can smoke different things, like cheese, but meat is the most common.

Smoking involves barbecuing a meat low and slow (3+ hours) with indirect heat in an enclosed grill. In addition, you allow a hard wood, such as hickory or apple, to slowly smolder and smoke.

The smoke adds a deep, complex flavor to the meat. Some of my favorite dishes are smoked like smoked brisket and smoked salmon.

It’s relaxing, fun and you of course get a delicious dish out of it!

Video of Smoking Meats

This video shows how to smoke a meat from setting up the grill, to adding the smoke, to properly cut your smoked masterpiece.

27. Bouldering

Bouldering is a type of rock climbing where you scale smaller rocks (under 15+) without any ropes attached.

Bouldering’s lack of ropes make it feel like a much more natural way to climb.

Just like rock climbing, you can climb both indoor in a climbing gym and outdoors on an actual boulder.

When you’re bouldering it’s always a good idea to climb with friends and crash pads. As you’ll see in the video below, the climbers have a series of crash pads under them and friends there to spot them in case they fall.

Bouldering is a great workout and a fun hobby for guys who are looking for something a little more extreme.

Video of Bouldering

Below is a video of a group of climbers bouldering in South Africa.

These guys make it look easy, but the climbing routes they’re crushing are incredibly difficult.

28. Beekeeping

Beekeeping is a fun hobby that can also be pretty lucrative.

While the initial investment in beekeeping gear can be high, there are quite a few different ways you can make money with your beehives. A couple examples:

Sell local honey

Sell beeswax

Offer pollination services

Now, since you’re dealing with an insect that can and will sting you, I recommend you research the beekeeping thoroughly rather than taking the “learn by doing” approach.

Like with most popular hobbies, there are a ton of great instructional YouTube videos that will teach you the ins and outs of beekeeping.

Video of Beekeeping

This video shows the best part of beekeeping: the process of collecting the honey!

29. Darts

Darts, like pool, is a great game to play at your local bar.

It’s very social, competitive and surprisingly difficult.

There are countless games you can play on a dart board from 501 (see below) to Cricket. The rules for each vary, but the underlying objective is to throw your darts at different points on the board.

Darts is easy to play, but tough to master.

Video of Darts

The dart game that you usually see in tournaments is 501. In 501, you have to score exactly 501 points by aiming your darts at different points on the board.

These two guys are masters. You’ll see they first aim for triple 20 (so a total of 60 points) and finish by aiming at various points on the board.

30. Grilling

Think about the last guy you saw grilling. Did he come off as effeminate?

Of course he didn’t. Grilling and smoking are by far the manliest ways to cook something.

Not only is grilling a super manly way to cook, the grilled food is incredible. If you’ve never had grilled flank steak, tri-tip or salmon it’s safe to say you haven’t lived.

Luckily, grilling is also a really healthy way to cook. When you grill, excess fat drips off of the meat, down through the grate and cooks away. This leaves you with a leaner piece of meat.

Video of Grilling

In the video, grill master Bobby Flay teaches President Obama how to grill a rib eye steak and corn.

31. Sailing

Sailing is an incredibly fun hobby that’s both relaxing and stimulating at the same time.

Sailing is also pretty tough so you’ll probably want to sail with an instructor the first few times. They’ll teach you the basics like how to adjust the sails to catch the wind, how to sail upwind, and how to turn the boat back over in case you flip.

I personally feel solo sailing, on a smaller boat, is more fun than sailing a bigger boat that requires a group, but try both and see what you prefer.

Regardless of which type of sailing you choose, it’s a great hobby for men of all ages.

Video of Sailing

The boat in the video is a larger sailboat. Like I mentioned above, I prefer a smaller boat, but this video will show you some of the beautiful views you’ll see sailing.

32. Fishing

A list of hobbies for men would be horribly incomplete without fishing.

Fishing is relaxing, while at the same time being challenging. It requires planning and a LOT of patience.

There are all different types of fishing:

Pole fishing (traditional cast and wait fishing)

Spear fishing

Hand fishing (like noodling)

Ice fishing

Fly fishing

Because there are so many different types of fishing, no matter where you live in the world, you’ll be able to try it

33. Gardening

What?!

You don’t think gardening should be on a list of hobbies for men?

I couldn’t disagree more. Being able to live off of food that you’ve grown is one of the manliest hobbies I can think of.

Outside of the more obvious benefits of gardening (growing your own food and beautifying an area) there are a couple huge benefits:

In a long term study of over 3,000 adults, daily gardening reduced the risk of dementia by 36%.

In horticultural therapy, gardening is also used to combat depression and mental illness.

When you’re gardening, you’re outside in the sun, you’re exercising and you’re making your yard beautiful.

34. Backpacking

There are two types of backpacking: backpack camping and backpack travelling.

While one explores nature, and the other a country, they’re one of the best ways to travel.

When you backpack, you’re carrying everything you need to survive on your back.

This helps put things into perspective and helps you realize how little you really need to get by.

Backpack camping and travelling are a both extremely fun hobbies and probably the best ways to explore a new location.

35. Motorcycling

Motorcycling is one of the most classic hobbies for men. It’s a lot of fun and gives you a ton of freedom and flexibility.

Getting started is pretty easy too. You can buy a decent bike for a thousand dollars or so and it doesn’t take too much practice to get good at.

Buying a motorcycle has a lot of practical value too. They’re one of the most gas efficient (and fun) modes of transportation and even allow you to zip through traffic.

36. Scuba Diving

Scuba diving is the best way to explore the strange and beautiful world that is our ocean.

Scuba diving is an experience unlike any you’ve had before. Being completely submersed under water, you’re in a brand new world that’s different than everything you’re used to. It’s almost completely silent. Moving is very different than you’re used to on land or on the surface of the water. Finally, you’re surrounded by strangely beautiful plants and fish.

This leads to an experience that is both very peaceful and very humbling.

It’s one of the most fun hobbies and can be enjoyed at just about any age.

Below you’ll see a diver completely surrounded by a school of fish.

Can you say humbling?

37. Chess

Chess is the ultimate mental battle between two men.

To be victorious, you have to constantly be thinking. You may have a plan of attack in mind, but your opponent’s moves force you to almost constantly adapt it.

You have to defend attacks, set up your own attacks, and, ultimately, take down their king.

Just like with playing music, regularly playing chess has a long list of mental benefits like:

Improves your memory

Increases problems solving skills

Helps prevent Alzheimer’s

Chess is a mentally stimulating and very fun hobby to try. As it requires more mental than psychical strength, it’s one of the best hobbies for men over 50.

38. Marksman/Shooting

Shooting is undeniably one of the most fun hobbies on our list.

It’s easy to get started and, with a little bit of practice, anyone can become a decent marksman.

One great part about shooting is that once you learn the basics, you have access to a wide range of different types of shooting. A few of the many possibilities:

Skeet shooting

Long range target shooting

Hunting

Trap shooting

Whichever arena of shooting you choose, shooting is guaranteed to be a good time.
