Elderly Instruments: All Things Strings

Behind the scenes at Elderly Instruments in Lansing, Mich., includes workshops with guest musicians and the office of co-founder/owner Stan Werbin.

It's largely guitar-centric - so's the world as we know it - but there are a few moments ... Hang in there until :44 in, when we go into The Vault and poke around a bit. The host mentions the prices, $50,000, $125,000, even 250,000. The interviewer wonders what kind of instrument would be worth that much money, and the host pulls from the shelf a small rectangular case. Well, at that point I knew what was coming, but still ... It was a nice old F-5, probably Lloyd Loar at that price, in very good shape, ensconced in plush green velvet. I expect some of you have seen and heard this instrument, and I'm sure that in person, played by someone with the right skills, it must sound great. This guy played it a bit, nothing fancy, so not really showing it off well. But for those who have never been this close to The Real Thing, this is a real treat.

There are plenty of other reasons to see this show, including a lot of live music from a diverse range of musicians. This was the high point, for me anyway.
