A man returned home to find two men burgling his house in Bolton.

At around 11.15am on Sunday 22 September 2013, the 71-year-old man returned home to his house on Barley Brook Meadow in Sharples, after leaving only a short time earlier to go for a walk.

As he approached his house, he noticed the side gate was open, which was unusual. He went into the back garden and saw a man exiting his house via the conservatory doors. The man ran through the garden and climbed over the fence at the back, which leads to shrublands and local schools.

The 71-year-old man then saw a second man coming through the patio doors and attempted to tackle him to stop him.

A brief struggle ensued, during which the victim was hit to the side of his head with an object believed to have been stolen during the burglary. The man was then able to escape and jumped over the fence after his accomplice.

The fence backs onto the area around Sharples High School and the leisure centre.

Cash, two computer tablets, a camera and other items were stolen.

The two men are described as white, in their late teens and around 5ft 8in tall. They were wearing dark jogging bottoms and dark hooded tops with the hoods pulled up.

Detective Sergeant Rob Parker based at Astley Bridge police station said: “We are extremely keen to identify these two men, who broke into this house in broad daylight and even had the audacity to attack this man when he confronted one of the men for being in his home. Thankfully, the victim was not injured during this ordeal.

“We believe there may have been a number of dog walkers in the area at the time of this crime and we are also appealing to them to come forward and help us with our enquiries – did you see two men hanging around this estate in Sharples on Sunday morning or did you see them running away afterwards?

“If anyone has any information, they are asked to call officers directly at Astley Bridge police station on 0161 856 5761.”

Information can also be passed anonymously to police by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
