Venezuela's independence is July 5th, so over here in this little family we get to celebrate one day after the other for Independence.
On these days of hardship in Venezuela it is hard to celebrate as much as we celebrate the US's independence, because right now there is less and less freedom over there, but we still love our country and we can still celebrate it and pay a little tribute.
I am so proud that I made this craft, because as soon as finished it Derek and the kids started asking what it was. So it paved the way to talk about Venezuela and a teaching opportunity.
Adrian was so cute, he even asked me if the map of Venezuela really had a heart in it! He said he wanted to see a real map to check it out. So that was a great way to open up the Venezuelan Atlas and talk about all the places I've been, where exactly is Caracas and many many more important things I want the kids to learn about Venezuela.
I have it now on our dining room wall displayed among other pictures and paintings, it looks amazing and it reminds us every day about that piece of culture this family inherited.
Here are the full instructions to make your own Venezuela String Art (You can also make this with any other map you wish!):
Venezuela Map String Art
Supplies:
1 piece of wood about 11" x 11" (I used Pine #2)
Sand paper
Dark blue craft paint
a piece of cloth to stain the wood
Tape
A map template (download mine here)
A bone folder or a dry pen
4 yellow embroidery floss skeins (8.7 yards each)
1 red embroidery floss skein (you really need very little)
Lots of nails (I used 18 x 19mm)
A hammer
A glue gun
Instructions:
Start by sanding the sides of your wood if necessary, my piece of wood was cut from a long piece so 2 sides where very rough but the top of it didn't need any sanding.
Place a little bit of paint directly on the cloth and start staining the wood, do this little by little and do not use too much paint, otherwise you will cover the wood texture. Also do it quickly because the paint will dry very fast and it will show a mark if you don't spread it well. Stain the wood on the sides too. Let it dry.
Print out the Venezuela map template and cut roughly on the sides, place it on the wood where you want it to be. Tape it softly.
Start marking all the edge of the map with the bone or pen, make sure you will be able to see the mark once you take out the template.
Hammer the nails one by one all along the map's edge onto the wood. Try to have them at the same distance from each other and don't worry about being too accurate to the map, it will have to be a little loose, as long as you don't lose the overall shape of your country it's all good!
Once you are done with all the nails, start stringing! Tie a knot on any nail you decide to start and go around the inside border of the map, then you can start going from side to sides, however you wish, always keeping it very tight and with no specific order.
When one skein is done, tie a knot on any nail and start with the next until all the map's area is well covered. At the end leave some floss to go around the border again, this time on the outside.
With the red floss string the heart with the same procedure, border first and then the inside.
Now cut one by one all the leftover strings of the knots and apply a little bit of glue with the glue gun, this will help reinforce the knot. It's all done, display it in your home proudly!
Tips:
Use another pen or a pointy tool to help you move the strings down when you are going around the nails, since the spaces are small, the fingers tend to be too big for this.
To hang this, use 3M command strips, so easy!!

El día de la independencia de Venezuela es el 5 de julio, así que aquí en esta pequeña familia celebramos un dos días seguidos, primero la de EEUU y luego la de Venezuela.
En estos días en que la situación está tan dificil en Venezuela no es nada fácil celebrar su independencia puesto porque ahora hay menos y menos libertad allá. Pero como todavía amamos a nuestro país y tenemos mucha fé, podemos celebrar y rendirle un pequeño homenaje desde aquí.
Estoy muy orgullosa de haber hecho esta manualidad, porque en cuanto la terminé Derek y los chicos comenzaron a preguntar que qué era eso. Así que fué perfecto para hablarles más de Venezuela y una oportunidad de enseñarles.
Adrian tan cuchi, me preguntó que si el mapa de Venezuela ¡realmente tenía un corazón! Dijo que quería ver un mapa de verdad para comprobar su forma. Así que ha sido una buena manera de sentarme y abrir el Atlas de Venezuela y enseñarles todos los lugares donde he estado, donde se encuentra exactamente Caracas y muchas cosas más importantes de Venezuela que quiero que los niños aprendan.
Lo tengo ahora colgado en nuestra pared del comedor junto a otros cuadritos, se ve muy chévere y nos recuerda todos los días sobre esa parte de cultura de esta familia heredó.
Aquí están las instrucciones completas para que hagan su propia manualidad del mapa de Venezuela (También puede hacer esto con cualquier otro mapa!):
Manualidad de Mapa de Venezuela con Hilos
Materiales:
Un pedazo de madera de unas 11 x 11 pulgadas (yo usé pino #2)
Papel de lija
Pintura azul de manualidades (guache o acrílico)
Un trozo de tela para teñir la madera
Teipe
Una plantilla de mapa (aquí puedes descargar la mía)
Una huesito para marcar o un bolígrafo seco
4 rollitos de hilo de bordar o sedalina de color amarillo (8,7 metros cada uno)
1 rollito de de hilo de bordar o sedalina de color rojo (realmente necesitarás muy poco)
Un montón de clavitos (yo usé de 18 x 19 mm)
Un martillo
Pistola de silicona
Instrucciones:
Comienza lijando los lados de la madera si es necesario, mi pedazo de madera fue cortada de una pieza larga así que 2 lados quedaron muy ásperos, pero la parte superior no necesitó lijado.
Coloca un poco de la pintura directamente sobre la tela y empezar a teñir la madera, hazlo poco a poco y no uses mucha pintura, de lo contrario se cubrirá la textura de la madera. Haz todo esto rápidamente porque la pintura se seca muy rápido y saldrá una marca si no se extiende bien. Tiñe la madera en los lados también. Deja que se seque.
Imprime la plantilla del mapa de Venezuela y córtala alrededor dejando un espacio del borde del mapa, colócalo sobre la madera en la parte donde quieres que quede. Pega con teipe suavemente.
Comienza marcando todo el borde del mapa con el hueso o el bolígrafo, asegúrate de que puedas ver la marca quitar la plantilla.
Clava los clavos (valga la redundancia) uno por uno a lo largo del borde del mapa en la madera. Trata de que te queden a la misma distancia unos de otros y no te preocupes porque el mapa quede tan preciso, debe ser un poco flojo, siempre y cuando no pierda la forma general del país está todo bien!
Una vez que hayas terminado con todos los clavos, ¡empieza con el hilo! Haz un nudito en cualquier clavo donde decidas comenzar y lleva el hilo alrededor del borde interior del mapa. Después, puedes empezar a ir de un lado a otro, de arriba a abajo, como quieras, siempre teniendo el hilo muy apretado y sin orden específico.
Cuando se termina un rollito haz un nudo en cualquier clavito y continúa con el siguiente rollo hasta que toda la superficie del mapa está bien cubierta. Al final deja un poco de hilo para pasarlo alrededor de la frontera otra vez, pero esta vez en el exterior.
Enrolla el corazón con el hilo rojo y el mismo procedimiento, el borde primero y luego el interior.
Ahora corta uno por uno todos los hilos sobrantes de los nudos y aplicar un poco de silicona con la pistola, esto ayudará a reforzar los nudos. Ya quedó listo, ¡cuélgalo en tu casa con orgullo!
Tips:
Utilice otro bolígrafo o una herramienta puntiaguda para ayudarle a mover los hilos hacia abajo cuando vas alrededor de los clavitos ya que los espacios son pequeñitos y los dedos tienden a ser demasiado grandes para eso.
Para colgar, te recomiendo usar Command Strips de 3M, super fáciles!
