I will be gone this week on vacation in Vermont, back to our rustic little cabin by the lake and will have very limited cell service or internet (yay!). BUT this week is also chock full of great events, so I’m going to give you a little heads up so you don’t miss any of them.
MONDAY Aug. 10
The Saratoga Horse Movie Series: Secretariat is tonight in Congress Park in Saratoga Springs. Admission is free. In celebration of both the Spa City’s Centennial and The New York State Recreation and Park Society’s 75th Silver Anniversary, NYSRPS is hosting the first of its kind outdoor horse movie series Monday evenings in August. The 4 week series kicks off with the showing of Black Stallion at Brown’s Beach August 3rd, followed by Secretariat and Sea Biscuit at Congress Park August 10th and 17th respectively, and ends at SPA State Park / Victoria Pool with National Velvet. All movies begin at dark and are free of charge to the public.
TUESDAY Aug. 11
2015 Regal Summer Movie Express has $1 movies at the Regal Cinema in Clifton Park Center Mall on Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 10am for nine weeks. Movie admission is just $1 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Will Rogers Institute. Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis. August 11: Madagascar 3, August 12: Dolphin Tale 2.
Summer Nature Craft Hour at Camp Saratoga is today from 10-11am at Camp Saratoga, Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park, 80 Scout Road, Gansevoort. Cost is $5 day-of. Are you anxious to get crafty? Drop-in anytime between 10 and 11am at the pavilion located directly next to Delegan Pond and create a fun and unique nature craft. Please use Parking Lot #1 located on Scout Road directly across from Delegan Pond.
Also on the 11th is Exploring the Outdoors at Saratoga Spa State Park from . Learn about the five senses and use them to explore the great outdoors! This class offers children ages 2-5 the opportunity to safely investigate the natural world through play and sensory awareness. Registration is required. Fee is $3 per child or $5 per family. Bow Tie Cinema Summer Kids Series 2015 – The Croods is today and Wednesday at 10am at Bow Tie Cinemas at the Wilton Mall in Saratoga Springs. Admission is FREE.
Another great event on the 11th is a Free Kids Program: Story Hour with Saratoga Springs Publishing from 10-11am at Healthy Living Market and Cafe in Saratoga. They are proud to partner with Saratoga Springs Publishing to bring your tots a free story hour! Local author Tim Conners will be reading from his PETA-endorsed book, A Pig in my Backyard. After this engaging story is complete, children will be able to create a small craft related to the story!

WEDNESDAY Aug. 12
Superheroes of Science is today at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St in Saratoga Springs from 10am to 12pm. This high energy, interactive program is presented by award winning author and science celebrity Steve “The Dirtmeister” Tomecek. Steve will recreate some of the great scientific discoveries and also discuss some of the trials and tribulations that these men and women had to endure when they were conducting their research. Their discoveries forever changed the world we live in. For ages 3 and up.This program is made possible by a grant to the Southern Adirondack Library System from the Saratoga county Youth Bureau and the Office of Children and Family Services.
Fun with Frogs is at 3pm today at Saratoga Spa State Park. Learn about the types of frogs that are in the park and how to identify them by their calls. Kids will be trying to catch some to observe! Performing Arts Family Series at the Common: The Zucchini Brothers is tonight at the Clifton Common Stage in Clifton Park at 7pm. Zany foot tapping music with “Words of Wisdom,” this band of brothers: Jack on guitar, Steve on keyboards, Sam on drums (each his own character, all of whom sing) offers up a musical stir-fry of styles. You never know just what these three zany guys will do. But one thing’s for sure, once you’ve seen ’em, you won’t forget ’em.
THURSDAY Aug. 13
Little Chefs is at Serendipity Arts Studio, 26D Congress St. today from 9:30 to 11am. Cost is $10. Bring your preschoolers to Serendipity Arts Studio to experience the joy of cooking and leave messes to them! Little Chef recipes are easy and help to develop kitchen and social skills in children age 7 and under. They provide as much or as little assistance as needed to grow your child’s confidence while letting them explore different mediums and have fun! An adult is required to remain with the child during the program. Note this recipe contains peanut butter. If you’re child is allergic, please bring a spread substitute. FRIDAY Aug. 14
Story Time & Snack with Healthy Living Market & Cafe is today at Northshire Bookstore on Broadway in Saratoga Springs at 10:30 on their Children’s Floor. Free and open to the public.
UpBeat on the Roof: Jocamo is tonight at the Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College, 815 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs at 7pm. Admission is free. The UpBeat on the Roof concert series celebrates its 15th year of offering nine free shows on the roof of the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College! The rooftop is accessible via the museum elevator or outdoor staircases. Founded in 1993, Jocamo is a group of veteran musicians who create their own old school brew of funk, R&B, soul, and rock. Inspired by the music of the Meters, Neville Brothers, Parliament/Funkadelic, James Brown and Marvin Gaye, Jocamo provides heavy groove with covers and original music. In addition to the free concert, the Tang Teaching Museum invites the public to a free guided tour of the museum with Assistant Director for Curatorial Affairs Rachel Seligman at 5:30pm before the show.
SATURDAY Aug. 15
Today at Family Saturdays at the Tang Museum at Skidmore College is Make and Decorate a Book. After viewing and discussing Arturo Herrera’s painted books in Opener 29: Arturo Herrera: Day Before, kids will learn a simple way to make a book, then decorate the covers in fantastic ways. The Tang Teaching Museum’s Family Saturday programs run from 2-3pm on Saturdays through August 22. Most of the programs include a tour of a specific exhibition followed by an art-making project. All programs are free and open to the public, and suitable for children ages 5 and older, accompanied by their adult companions. Reservations can be made one week before each week’s program.
