Gingerbread themed learning activities for preschoolers, including how to make healthy gluten free gingerbread men.

This week, we read The Gingerbread Man by Jim Aylesworth. It is a nicely illustrated version of the classic tale, and we read it because it was this week’s Virtual Book Club pick. Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett and Gingerbread Mouse by Katy Bratun are two fun alternatives for this theme.

We had to move our family to a gluten free diet about a year and a half ago, and the kids miss making gingerbread men and gingerbread houses. Eventually, I will find a decent gluten-free gingerbread recipe. Please let me know if you happen to have one? In the meantime, the kids enjoyed decorating and eating these very healthy gluten free gingerbread men!

How to Make Healthy Gluten Free Gingerbread Men

Making healthy gluten free gingerbread men is easy!

Materials:

Corn tortillas. We usually buy these at Costco, because I am lazy. You can make them easily at home if you have masa harina and hot water. We recommend an electric kettle and a tortilla press, but you can also flatten your tortillas between two plates, or roll them out by hand.

Gingerbread man cookie cutter.

Raisins

Sunflower seeds

Any other food items you would like to use to decorate. String cheese would have been fun, but we didn’t have any on hand.

Directions:

Place your tortilla on a plate or cutting board. A cutting board works better, in our experience, even though the plate apparently made it into my photo. Press down until you have cut out your gingerbread man shape.

Take your gingerbread man and decorating supplies to the table.

Get to work decorating! We just placed the decorations on our men and then the kids picked them off to eat them. If you want the decorations to stick, cream cheese should work well.

My kids used the scraps from their tortillas to add onto their gingerbread men. This is seven-year-old Lily’s creation – she added shoes, some ground, and a sandwich for her gingerbread man.

Enjoy eating your gluten free gingerbread man!
