I grew up in the Lower Mainland of BC. Winters in Vancouver did nothing to prepare me for winter in Montréal. A couple days of snow per year, a couple days with the temperature below zero, and that was what we considered cold.

Cub knows cold:

Living in Montréal for the past six years, new words have entered my vocabulary: “wind chill,” “snow squall,” “polar vortex,” “minus 30.” Over the course of my first winter in Québec, I learned how to dress to prevent exposed skin, and experienced frozen eye lashes and nasal passages for the first time. I documented the experience for those wimps back home:

While I’ve gotten used to the cold, and come to love the snow, I can’t say that my skin is happy about the climate. Already prone to dry skin, the winter chills leave my hands visibly dry and oftentimes sore.

I discovered Aveeno Skin Relief Fragrance Free Lotion when I gave birth to Cub. Due to my constant hand washing, my skin had become so dry that every time I touched my hands to my yoga pants (new Mom uniform), I could feel my skin catching on the synthetic fibres. Shoppers Drug Mart, known here as Pharmaprix, is my go-to pharmacy, and I picked up two pumps of Aveeno: one to put next to my bed and one next to the couch. Every time I sat down to nurse, I’d apply some cream. In no time, my hands were soft again and my skin was no longer catching on my clothes! As you know, I always check out my cosmetic products over at the Environmental Working Group, and the ingredients in this Aveeno product are very safe, scoring a 2.

I am a loyal Shoppers Drug Mart shopper because of their Optimum Points and their helpful and knowledgeable Beauty Experts. With money tight while I was pregnant, I remember being so proud to get everything we needed using the $100 in Optimum credit I had earned. So many loyalty programs never pay off: this one does! When I first started teaching, I wanted to wear makeup to look more mature. (I was often confused for a student.) I went in to my local Shoppers Drug Mart and laid it out for the Beauty Expert: “I don’t know how to do my own makeup without looking like a clown, and I want to look like a grown up.” I still remember how excited I was when I got home: I sat down and did my makeup exactly how she’d explained, and I loved it!

Now that I am far too lazy to wear makeup, it’s critical that I keep my skin healthy: nothing’s covering it up! If you want to make sure your skin-care routine is on track, Shoppers Drug Mart offers a Skin Analysis using the beautyRx tool. You’ll get your skin’s hydration level checked through the Moisture Checker and a Video Microscope will help assess your skin type by magnifying your skin’s surface 30 times. These two steps will help the Beauty Expert propose the best products for your skin this winter. I can’t wait to try it out!
