One of the things I remember vividly from my childhood is Trick-or-Treating on Halloween.  I don't know how things work where you're from, but in my neck of the woods we only went Trick-or-Treating on Halloween.  So what if it was a Sunday?  The Trick-or Treating (while it may be traced back to pagan rituals) has little to do with anything other than candy for those out trying to enjoy a little ghoulish fun.

It's weird the things you remember sometimes.  I specifically remember that my sister and I would go Trick-or-Treating, going farther than we were supposed to, and we'd pass this business with a illuminated blue sign.  We felt like we'd walked forever.  Funny thing is, I live just down the street from that business now (it's an HVAC company) and it's really not very far at all.

Halloween, despite the fact that most people think of it as nothing more than a night to dress up and get some candy, is really a time for making memories.  Most any time can be actually.  Just like #SundaySupper, it's really about the coming together.  So, this week I'll be taking my kids out with a friend of ours, just like we have for the last few years, and we'll make some memories.  Some might be memories that fade, but others will stick around.

Speaking of sticking around... These Bewitchingly Delicious Butterscotch Broomstick Cakepops might stick around your waist for a while, but they're totally worth it!

Bewitchingly Delicious Butterscotch Broomstick Cakepops

1 Box White Cake Mix (plus ingredients are indicated on box)

1 Box Instant Butterscotch Pudding Mix

1 Can Vanilla Icing

1 Cup Graham Cracker Crumbs

2 Bags Butterscotch Chips

1/2 Cup Milk

1 Small Bag Pretzel Rods

Preheat your oven per the directions on your cake mix.  Mix the wet ingredients indicated for your cake mix (generally a mixture of egg, water and oil).  Stir in the pudding mix.  Once the pudding mix is dissolved, stir in the cake mix.  Mix well until there are no visible lumps.  Pour into a greased 9 x 13 pan and bake according to the package directions.  Allow the cake to cool completely.

Once cooled, break up the cake using a fork.  Mix together the cake, frosting, graham cracker crumbs and 1/2 cup of the butterscotch chips.

Wrap a cutting board in wax paper before proceeding.

Using clean hands, form gumball sized balls of dough.  Place them on the wax paper, leaving about an inch between each.  Refrigerate the dough balls until they are well chilled.

In a microwave safe dish, heat 1/4 cup of the butterscotch chips at 30 second intervals (stirring between each) until the chips are melted.  One at a time, dip the end of a pretzel rod into the melted butterscotch and push the coated end into a dough ball.  Repeat with all of the dough balls.  Return the balls to the refrigerator until the butterscotch has set.

When the butterscotch has set, you can prepare to dip the cakepops.  Starting with 1 cup of butterscotch chips in a microwave safe dish, add 2 teaspoons of milk and microwave at 30 second intervals until the butterscotch has melted completely.  Carefully dip each cakepop, allowing the excess butterscotch to drip off, and return them to the wax paper.  Once all of the cakepops have been dipped, return them to the refrigerator.  They will need to chill over night.

If it's simply flavor you're going for, you could stop here.  If you want to get crazy and make your cakepops look like a witch's broom, you just need about another cup of the butterscotch chips and a small sandwich bag.  Melt the chips, just as before, and pour them into the bag.  Pushing the melted butterscotch to the corner, simply snip the corner of the bag and pipe the butterscotch onto the cold cakepops, top to bottom - repeating all the way around.  You can add a second layer if you need additional coverage.  Pipe around the base of the pretzel rod for a finished look and you're all done!

These cakepops are killer - and that's perfect for this time of year!  They'll be a hit with little ghouls and goblins alike.  They're really not as complicated as they may sound, and you can even let the kids help you make the dough balls!  My kids had a great time getting their hands in there.  Maybe it'll even been one of those memories that sticks around for years.
