Babies have such delicate skin and the last thing you want is to use a product on their skin that contains harsh chemicals. Unfortunately, just because a product is made for babies, it doesn’t mean it’s safe. You can take a quick glance at the Environmental Working Group’s database and see that a lot of products made for babies have ingredients you actually DO NOT want anywhere near your baby.

In my home we like to minimize exposure to toxic chemicals and even more so around our babies because they are still developing and their bodies are not equipped to handle a chemical overload. Our skin is the largest organ we have and everything we put on it gets absorbed into the body, so using safer skin products must be a priority.

I’ve found that using homemade baby products it’s the best way to keep your child away from toxic chemicals. They are also very affordable and easy to make so why not, right?

Making a non-toxic baby wash is probably the easiest product you’ll ever make but before we get into it I want to make it clear that babies do not need to be washed daily. In fact, it is best they don’t bathe daily since it strips away their natural oils.  You should only bathe your baby if they’re dirty or a few times a week, if that. As your baby gets older and they start crawling and getting more dirty you’ll want to bathe them more but for those first few months it’s not that necessary.

The cleaning agent in this recipe is castile soap. This castile soap is a concentrated version so it’s important to always dilute it before using it. It can also dry out some types of skin so it’s great to combine castile soap with some sort of moisturizer. In my foaming hand soap recipe we mix it with vitamin E oil since the soap has a water base, but for this baby wash we are using a base of coconut milk.

Why coconut milk?

Coconut milk nourishes your baby’s skin and hair. It is rich in vitamins A and C, some vitamins B, calcium, iron, natural proteins and it even contains lauric acid.

It helps keep your baby’s skin moisturized and it even helps fight eczema, sunburn or dry skin. Coconut milk is great for both hair and skin so this baby wash is meant to be used on your baby’s entire body.  You can also use it on your body, especially if you’re prone to dry skin.

Keep in mind that this baby wash doesn’t have preservatives, which means it won’t last a long time. I usually keep it out a few days at a time and have left it out for a week without it spoiling. However, it’s best to store it in your refrigerator between uses.

You can also freeze half of it and thaw it right before you’re done using the first half.  If you don’t want to deal with this, make this foaming soap instead.

DIY Organic Baby Wash

Ingredients:

1 Foaming soap dispenser bottle

Organic coconut milk

3 tablespoons of castile soap

1 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil (optional)

Directions:

In your foaming hand soap dispenser, add the castile soap and vitamin E oil.

Fill the rest of the bottle with coconut milk.

Put the top back on and give it a good shake. It’s now ready to use.

You can use this baby wash on a daily basis. I keep it on our sink and use it to wash my baby’s hands and then bring it into the shower during bath time.

This baby wash doesn’t contain any preservatives so make it when you plan to use it.

You will notice how nice and soft this baby wash leaves your baby’s skin. Plus you can rest assure that your baby’s skin is not getting exposure to toxic chemicals. Don’t forgot to try it on yourself, you’ll be happily surprised with the results.
