(Kuala Lumpur 26 May) Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina has caught many by surprise moving a motion in Dewan Rakyat for PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang to table his private member’s bill on hudud for first reading. MCA is extremely unhappy, ticking off Umno for damaging the Barisan Nasional spirit.

MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai accuses Umno and PAS collaborate behind the scene and has discarded other members in Barisan Nasional. “MCA would be having a meeting to discuss with other members (of Barisan Nasional).

He told Sin Chew Daily that Umno’s act has crossed MCA’s baseline.

He reminds Umno that 13 members of Barisan Nasional have achieved consensus last year to firmly oppose implementation of hudud law in the country.

MCA would be contacting 12 other members to seek a common stand. The issue is expected to raise in Cabinet meeting tomorrow for discussion.

In an unprecedented move, the Dewan Rakyat allowed Hadi to table the private member’s bill on hudud law today, proposing to amend the Syariah Court 2016 (criminal jurisdiction). The private member’s bill overtook three other bills and motion proposed by the government.

Azalina cited Clause 14 (2) of Standing Order to propose Hadi to be ahead of government matters by tabling the private member’s bills in advance. The motion was seconded by Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar said he exercised his wisdom to approve the private member’s bill, which is not supposed to reach its turn.

“I allow the private member’s bill, which is listed as the last item on the Order Paper to be tabled in the house. I am creating a precedent.”

The Speaker said Hadi would read the motion when the house resumed for is meeting next time under Clause 15 (5) of Standing Order.

Although Pandikar allowed Hadi to table the bill for first reading, Hadi requested for the private member’s bill to be deferred to next meeting for a debate and vote.

Once the bill is approved, the Kelantan state government would implement hudud law.

Today is the last day of sitting. Next sitting resumes in October.
