There is nothing more frustrating that realizing you’ve run out of laundry detergent or some other necessity when your little one is sick.  Or sleeping.  Or there are sub-zero temperatures outside.  Or you just got back from an exhausting day at work and just want to collapse….you get the picture.  Little runs to the store here and there add up in gas costs and let’s be honest, a quick run to Target for Tide usually turns into us dropping an extra $50 for stuff we didn’t intend on buying.  Don’t run out of what you need, sign up for a service that will ship your staples on a schedule. Here are a few of my favorites along with some coupon codes to save you even more!

Clothing Costs

Once the cute outfits from your baby shower run out, you’re going to need to stock up.  Babies grow like weeds and puke and poop on everything.  Make sure you have lots of clothes!  Check with friends and family who can pass clothes along, check craigslist and freecycle and local thrift stores/garage sales, etc.  You really can clothe your child for very little cost.  Check out my post on savings tons of money on children’s clothes here.  If you are looking for something specific, there are numerous money saving websites that will help you save money and not pay full price!

Clothbottombaby.com

Diapers are kind of like clothing right? If you REALLY want to save a ton of cash over the long run, try cloth diapering instead of using disposables. Right now at Cloth Bottom Baby, NEW CUSTOMERS can save 15% off + get FREE SHIPPING with coupon code# CBBNEWBIE. I suggest stocking up on multiple styles and sizes with your first order since you get the discount. In fact, cloth diapering can be used well past potty training because many children have bed wetting issues well into childhood.

Here is a great tip from a family member on saving money with cloth diapers for older children who wet the bed. I could have used this to save hundreds instead of shelling out a small fortune on pull ups and overnight pants!

Buy Goodnights underwear (cloth underwear that has a pocket to insert an absorbent pad) or these fabric pull ups. The cost is around $20 for 2 pairs and 4 pads.

Try these microfleece cloth diaper insert, they really work!  A doubler insert could also be added. Some nights they fail just the same as disposables will do if your child has had too much to drink close to bedtime.  Try to stop them for at least 2 hours ahead and make sure they empty their bladder before bedtime.

Soap can’t be used on cloth inserts because it can ruin the absorbency, so try this DIY recipe from the Eco Friendly Family for cloth diaper cleanser!

Baby Food

One of the best ways to save money with a new baby is to breastfeed.  The benefits of breastfeeding  are amazing and if you CAN, please give it a try!  Some women can not, so if you can’t do NOT beat yourself up over it!  If you are able, even the cost of a pump is much less than the hundreds to thousands you would otherwise spend on formula.

Once your baby is able to eat solids, you’ll want to minimize your costs on baby food.  Store bought baby food can be expensive and sometimes not fresh or the best quality.  I suggest making your own!  Set aside one day a week to buy fresh food and prepare it.  A BLENDTEC is a lifesaver and will not only last through your baby food needs, but well into their childhood (it comes with an 8 year warranty)! I use my Blendtec blender daily, sometimes several times a day.  I use it for so many items, such as these 10 store bought items you should make at home!  My Blendtec has been life changing for me and has saved me SO much money.  Plus, when you make your own baby food, you know exactly what is going into it!  You can puree practically anything with a Blendtec and then pour the puree into ice cube trays.  Then, pop out a few cubes an hour or two before feeding time and you’re good to go!  When you check out their website, do a quick search for “baby” under the recipe section for some fantastic ideas!

When you subscribe to Amazon Mom, you will get access to just about every healthy baby food item you can think of, many at deep discounts if you opt for subscribe and save!  Of course Amazon Mom includes free 2 days shipping so you don’t need to run out to the store for every little thing which is a great convenience come flu season!  Besides Amazon, another healthy, all natural site I LOVE is THRIVE MARKET.  I only wish Thrive was around when my daughters were little.  The closest Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods is about 40 minutes from me, plus, they are near the city and it’s a PAIN to take little ones in both places.  Not to mention the COSTS. UGH!  Really?!?!  Thrive Market is this revolutionary online membership store.  They offer DEEP discounts for all kinds of healthy foods, products and household goods.  Not only that, but your membership is a scholarship to a family in need.  You pay about $5 per month for the benefits of shopping at Thrive (you will make your money up QUICKLY and then some) and a family living in an impoverished food dessert will receive a free membership.  You benefit as you help someone else in need.  This is a win win idea, and I’ve already placed two large orders with Thrive and couldn’t be happier!
