Amal Clooney will be representing ISIS survivors of the Yazidi genocide including Nobel Peace Prize nominee Nadia Murad, who bravely spoke out against her sexual enslavement.
In 2014, 19-year-old Murad escaped after being held in captivity by ISIS (Daesh) with thousands of other girls for nearly three months, enduring brutal torture and rape. Today, Murad serves as a fierce advocate for survivors of the Yazidi genocide.
Now Amal Clooney is joining forces with Murad and other genocide survivors to lead a crusade for justice against the Islamic State.
Clooney is currently a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers specializing in international law and human rights law and will serve as the counsel to ensure the Islamic State is held accountable for the sexual enslavement, genocide, and trafficking of thousands of girls and women.
"How can it be that the most serious crimes known to humanity are being carried out before our eyes but are not being prosecuted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague?" Clooney said in a statement to Women in the World.
"We know that systematic rapes have taken place, and that they are still taking place. And yet no one is being held to account. It is time that we see IS commanders in the dock in The Hague, and I am honored to have been asked to represent Nadia and the Yazidi community in their quest for legal accountability."
