We’ve had a busy three weeks! Over the last 21 days, our New Orleans team designed and built our first tiny home.
Built in partnership with our friends at Tiny House Nation, the one bedroom / one bathroom house is 430 square feet. That might sound small, but it includes all the features of a standard size Make It Right home: solar-power, washer / dryer, dishwasher, oven and more! See below to discover all the great features in this beautiful new home, see inside the home – and meet the homeowner!
The home has a porch that wraps around three sides of the house. At 66 square feet, this porch is large enough to host a party or bbq! We used Benjamin Moore’s Sweet Daphne and Gray Owl to paint the exterior of the home.
Interior designer Nomita Joshi Gupta of Spruce NOLA selected the furnishings and textiles inside the home – all produced with sustainable wood and natural fibers and dyes.
The living room and kitchen receive abundant natural light from Integrity by Marvin doors and windows.
The space-saving folding table was handcrafted by Tiny House Nation host Zach Giffin and features an inlay of Louisiana’s Cane River, the ancestral home of homeowner Lurelia Freeman. The floors are from Shaw Floors Epic Hardwood line.
The kitchen features recycled glass countertops from Cosentino’s Silestone Eco line and Kohler plumbing fixtures.
The bedroom is full of natural light – and fits a queen-size bed provided by Wayfair.
The bedroom also includes two closets with barn doors and a full length mirror.
Like all Make It Right homes, the tiny house is solar-powered and LEED Platinum certified.

And there’s something cool inside the walls, too! For Earth Day this year, American Eagle Outfitters collected thousands of pairs of unwanted jeans and turned them into denim insulation. And now they’re inside the tiny house!
Across the street from the tiny house, volunteers installed a brand-new community garden. What a great view!
We’re MOST excited that the tiny house means we can welcome Lurelia Freeman to the neighborhood. Lurelia is a middle school teacher at Arise Academy, a charter school in New Orleans. She speaks four languages, loves to cook and is thrilled to be living in the Lower 9th Ward. A big welcome to you, Lurelia! (pictured below with John Weisbarth, host of Tiny House Nation)
