While the force of my FOMO may still be going strong from missing out in the Burning Man festivities this year, unfortunate news of rainfall on the playa and radical news in the electronic music realm lighten the load of my frustration. You could say I’m not mad at all that I decided to remain L.A side this round and hopefully you feel this way too after reading about the musical heat permeating our glorious city this Labor Day weekend. I’ll be doing sunshine dances for you all weekend burners and while the weather scare may have been frightful, I hope the fire from the burn is delightful. Cheers!

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 27

AMANDA PANDA, COCODISCO & NATALIA BENSON

PATTERN BAR. LOS ANGELES

Three very passionate selectors take the controls for a night to remember….

THE A/NR THREE

Amanda Panda

Music is the great uniter. It’s an incredible force that provides meaning where words fail. Amanda Panda has found that her love for music is something that provides balance to her life and her ability to connect with people through DJing has created the perfect avenue for her to share this deep passion. Music has always been a very important part of her life, but as a DJ, she has been able to transform this passion into an art. Hailing from San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angles alike, she has garnered quite the following over the years and has been invited to play all over the country and Mexico, playing alongside some of the biggest names in the world of electronic music. Amanda takes pride in the fact that her musical flavor has great range, but her specialties are in tech-house and techno. From poolside daytime affairs to big nightclubs and late-night afterhours, Amanda can do it all and never fails to leave her mark wherever she plays.

Natalia Benson

Natalia Benson’s first love has always been music; her CPA / music obsessed father did name her after Van Morrison’s classic, “Natalia” off the scarcely mentioned album Wavelengths .. A contemporary dancer turned jewelry designer by the age of 20, Natalia decided to learn djing as a means to channel unexpressed energy after long hours of solitude & designing.

Since living in Los Angeles she has been building a jewelry line under her name & recently began djing everything from fashion parties, after-hours & weekly residencies.

Coco Disco (Elise Welch)

Elise (COCODISCO) first realized her passion for music at a young age growing up listening to her parents playing classic rock and disco records. As a child she played piano, guitar, and violin. After living in France, England, and Italy she was introduced to dance music and now plays deep house, house, disco, and nudisco. She started professionally DJing in 2010 after repeatedly having her fellow DJ friends insist she start because of her amazing ear for music. She now DJs at several venues bringing people the newest and best trends in music and making it impossible not to dance.

FRIDAY AUGUST 29

JIMMY MAHERAS/ECLECTIC SELECTORS SERIES

PATTERN BAR. LOS ANGELES

Keep it classy and unpredictable with the Eclectic Selectors Series.

This is an evening of eclecticism where selectors dig deep in to their music collections to find the perfect music for a perfect evening, music they might not play anywhere else.

“Brooklyn born Jimmy Maheras started to fiddle with knobs and faders back in the late 90s. With NYC as his musical playground, Jimmy frequented electronic music’s most legendary clubs. These gritty nights of beats and bass, laid the foundation for Jimmy’s music career.

Much like historical New York DJs, Jimmy refuses to limit himself to a single genre. His unique sound spits soulful house, groovy disco and dark techno. Jimmy has played at some of the best venues in LA, such as Vanguard, King King, Culprit’s Standard rooftop parties, and a brief music residency at Avalon Hollywood.

In 2010, Jimmy partnered with fellow DJ, Bas, to launch Plastic Love. Today, the DJ pair conduct music podcasts, events, and fuse their talents behind the DJ booth to play shows all over Los Angeles and beyond.

As an individual artist, Jimmy’s first release, “Space Jam,” featuring a remix by the esteemed Matt Tolfrey, rolled out onto Crosstown Rebels sub-label, “RebelLion” in 2011. Following that were releases on Supernature, Leftroom and Stranjjur. Most recently, Jimmy’s released “The Man From Another Place” EP on the new label he started with Bas, aptly named Plastic Love Records.

Today, doubling as an A&R agent for Plastic Love and Culprit LA, Jimmy is using his musical expertise to identify talent and unearth new sounds.

Armed with unique beats, and a highly charged music resume, Jimmy is ready to blast his synths to audiences all over the world.”

FRIDAY AUGUST 30

DONUTS

TBD. LOS ANGELES

If you are lucky enough to crack the code and get the password, this is one tasty treat…

Donuts returns with Chicago acid and house pioneer- ROY DAVIS JR!

ROY DAVIS JR (Phuture-Chicago)

KIM ANH (Booby Trap!, YOWSAH)

YOUNG ADULTS (Young Adults)

MORELIAN (Dublab)

& PICKPOCKET

RSVP

This is a strictly-private event, and you’ll need a password to purchase tickets & RSVP for the private location.

Davis grew up in Chicago, and was turned on to house music at an early age by the likes of Lil’ Louis, DJ Pierre, Farley Jackmaster Funk, & Marshall Jefferson. Davis began his own production company named Phuture in the late 1980s and went on to become an A&R scout for record label Strictly Rhythm in NYC, whilst also running his Chicago-founded record label, Undaground Therapy Muzik, championed by artists like Seth Troxler in the 90′s. He was also a member of Phuture from Chicago-based acid-house group founded in 1985 by Spanky, DJ Pierre, and Herb J. The group’s 12-minute track “Acid Tracks” (1987) is one of several recordings that lay claim to being the first-ever acid house record!

Kim Anh (Booby Trap, Yowsah!)

Kim Anh has been a part of underground dance culture since the mid-90s, cultivating her own unique sound from the early styles of classic and acid house, garage and minimal wave. Since her humble dj beginnings collecting vinyl in 1998, then launching her career in music in 2005, she has become a globally recognized DJ and producer, headlining bills across North America and further reaching into cities such as Copenhagen, Paris, London and Berlin.

Young Adults

You may know Young Adults as the sister label to Friends of Friends, but the label owners, Leeor Brown and David Fisher, also perform as DJs under the same name… And they are truly fantastic. Having alignment with some of the greatest names in underground dance music and already having played some of the greatest parties currently in the States, they are ones to watch in 2014. The two are purist in the way that they prefer to play exclusively vinyl sets!

Get a taste of what they are all about in by listening to their mix for Fader and watch them rip up the Boiler Room.

Mor Elian

LA DJ/producer Mor Elian makes music that aims to bridge the gap between techno and house, with an energy that’s ideal for those post-club, afterparty moments. Her latest production, “U Don’t Know,” is a patient cut which slowly builds on a steady 4/4 beat and percussive embellishments. Soft pads and panning vocals emerge as reverberating claps and synth licks overtake the center of the mix. Eventually, Mor Elian’s galloping tune decomposes into an ambient break before ramping up once again to coast on its inherent nighttime vibe.

Pickpocket

Pickpocket founded Donuts in 2006. She has been booking DJs, live bands/artists as well as opening up with all-vinyl sets since the beginning of Donuts parties in San Francisco. Her late night sets include old school Chicago house, boogie, disco, and italo.
