The 20th century definitely brought a lot to the table when it comes to fashion. Last year the ‘50s and ‘60s made a slight come back with thigh-high socks, midi- A-line skirts and shift or trapeze-shaped dresses. However, this year we move to the next decade: the free-spirited, colorful and controversial ‘70s! The ‘70s are associated with the hippie movement, lots of good rock music, and the various attempts to be different and not to conform to traditional clothing styles. Unfortunately, these attempts have failed in the sense that they created a whole style in fashion: but it definitely is something amazing that you should not miss during the 2015 Spring/Summer fashion season! So what are the must-have items, the most frequently-seen materials and details for ‘70s fashion?
Suede: The absolute favorite among materials for shoes, bags, coats, jackets, etc. is suede! Depending on what budget you have, you can go for faux suede or real suede (the second one will be better quality and will survive for longer, but the first one is a lot cheaper!). Whether you pick a nice beige-colored waterfall suede jacket, slouchy suede boots, or a nice suede hobo bag, remember that this is the material to go for!
Fringes & Tassels: The most frequently seen details on literally everything are fringes and tassels. If you are one of the braver people, get a fringed kimono or biker jacket! There are plenty of fringed tops too. If you want to keep it as modest as possible, a nice fringed bag is a great choice: and you can find lots of these in high-street stores.
Floppy Hats: Hats have been having a comeback for the past year. Big, floppy hats with or without a ribbon or any detail on them are a great way to accessorize and set yourself apart from others. However, make sure it suits you! Match the floppy hat with long wavy hair for the perfect ‘70s effect.
Wide-legged Jeans and Trousers: Yes, we have had skinny and boyfriend silhouettes everywhere, but now the wide-legged or flare jeans and pants have returned. They are actually quite flattering and look best with heeled boots or shoes. However, you can also put on a trendy sneaker or nice flat sandals if you cannot be bothered to be uncomfortable!
Prints: Prints can be found everywhere, from dresses, tops and skirts to coats and jackets. Paisley and boho prints are the winners, but there are lots of florals found too! You can also try zig-zag stripes: they were a big hit in the ‘70s!
Off-the-Shoulder: Again, off-the-shoulder tops and dresses have invaded all stores right now. There are many colors and patterns available: black, white, pink, grey, light prints, floral prints, monochrome prints, etc. Off-the-shoulder pieces are quite sexy since they reveal your shoulders and collarbones, but are not too much in the same time.
Maxi Dresses: Long-sleeved, printed dresses made of a nice, light fabric are always associated with the decade of the hippie movement. Another option is the great halter neck maxi dress, which can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.
Jumpsuits: Long jumpsuits with flared trousers are a great resurrected memory from the ‘70s! Pair them with a pair of cool sandals and a big cuff and you are done!
Suede Mini-Skirt: It may not be suede, it may be a faux leather one, but it is required for the material to be thick, not flowy. One of the statement outfits for the ‘70s was definitely an A-line mini skirt matched with a polo neck, whether long-sleeved or with no sleeves.
Shirt Dresses: Shirt dresses are ones of the most versatile pieces from the ‘70s trend. Whether they are midi or mini length, patterned or in one color, they can be worn on a night out or to the office, and can definitely survive the test of time!
Embroidery: There is not much to say here, except that embroidery over a white dress or top is definitely the best pick for your vacation closet. An embroided clutch with tassels could be your statement accessory this season too!
Chunky Heels: The good news for all the girls who were terrified of sky-high pointy court heels that shoes this season are a lot comfortable! Whether we are talking about booties or sandals, the heels are chunky, bold and cool! Wedges are also an option, of course.
Hair Accessories: We have three words for you: head bangs and flowers!
Sunglasses: Maxi, retro sunglasses and round ones that remind us of John Lennon are the must have accessories that are going to finish your absolute ‘70s outfit!
