There are many benefits of kitchen islands. Adding workspace to your kitchen as well as storage options are just two of the advantages that come to mind.
I recently watched an episode of House Hunters where the prospective buyer said she didn’t want a kitchen island, but a kitchen continent. No doubt she was looking for the biggest kitchen workspace she could find!
Why Kitchen Islands?
When it comes to food preparation and cooking, kitchen islands are second to none. Some islands include sinks and cooktops, making less distance for a cook to cover and creating a more efficient kitchen. Because families are cooking together more these days, the extra space of a kitchen island helps to create separate kitchen work zones for everyone. To ensure your island is proportionate to your kitchen, the National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends at least 36” of space between the island and a wall and 42” between the island and surrounding cabinets and appliances to ensure safety and functionality.
Not only for cooking, a kitchen island is a great place for a quick meal, and can even be a convenient spot for the kids to do their homework. Because family and guests usually gravitate towards the heart of the home, a kitchen island is ideal for entertaining.
