At the base of the luxurious and expensive Hollywood Hills, Beachwood Canyon still retains some of its flavor as a laid back neighborhood for artists. When commercial director and indie filmmaker Jon Watts wanted to redesign his home built in 1948, he wanted to stay true to its Beachwood mid-century roots. So Jon tapped Los Angeles interior designer Jared Frank of Topsy Design. The challenge? Maximizing every bit of space in the 749 square foot home.

The tiny home was originally built as a “granny house” to the larger craftsman next door. On a limited budget, Frank created a built-in seating area out of closet to double the capacity for guests.

More built-ins transformed an unused corner into a welcoming breakfast nook, with a wood plank table.

Frank had a mid-century style bed custom made and in lieu of a headboard, found a period perfect Evelyn Ackerman textile on eBay to hang above the bed.

A stained knotty-pine ceiling will the same trim adds warmth and charm and was a “very cost-effective solution”.

The kitchen and bath will have to wait for Watts to do another movie, he said. But this Hollywood Hills home is proof positive that style can transform any space, no matter the size.
