Tokyo’s Ginza district at night

U.S. fashion label Michael Kors is continuing its development in Asia with the planned opening of a new store in Tokyo’s Ginza district this fall.

The 7,800 square foot flagship will be the first globally to bring together all of the brand’s product categories under one roof. Michael Kors has a handful of stores within Tokyo, but this new location in a prime shopping area will help the brand reach both residents and tourists.

Asian expansion

The store, located on Chuo Street, follows the new design plan used for the brand’s Jing’An Kerry Centre flagship in Shanghai opened last year (see story). Representing Michael Kors’ use of metallic in design, the façade features light reflecting elements mixed with recessed lighting, which the brand says evokes the feel of a sequin gown.

Both the second and third stories are covered by a video screen, and the first floor includes large windows surrounded by Bianco Dolomitimarble.

Inside, Michael Kors aimed to create a feel of “jet set glamour” with white marble flooring, zebra-skin accents, stainless steel fixtures and Macassar wood.

Women’s clothing, both Michael Kors Collection and Michael Michael Kors, will be housed on the third floor, along with a large shoe salon. This space is designed to be a quieter area for consumers to peruse the collection and interact with personal stylists.

On the ground floor will be handbag displays and accessories, watches, jewelry and eyewear, while a lower level will offer men’s attire and accessories.

This is the first free-standing Michael Kors store to carry menswear items.

Michael Kors is working to improve its position in menswear with new hire Mark Brashear at the department’s helm.

As president of men’s, Mr. Brashear’s appointment is a strategic step toward developing Michael Kors’ menswear division. The Michael Kors brand sees potential in men’s fashions given the success of other brands who have expanded or emphasized their male lines (see story).

“Japan is a key market for our continued development in Asia,” says John Idol, Chairman and CEO of Michael Kors in a brand statement. “The importance of Tokyo to luxury and fashion retailing makes this the right place and time to open our first store showcasing every facet of the Michael Kors brand.

“We look forward to offering the full breadth of our product assortment, presented with our signature glamour, chic and superlative service, to our Japanese customers and tourists traveling to Tokyo.”
