As beautiful as gold is, using the material too much can sometimes take you beyond the boundaries of elegance into the land of tacky. That’s why it’s always nice to see timepieces incorporating the precious metal while always maintaining their distinction and elegance.

One example of this is the Endeavour Perpetual Calendar Black Golden Edition, by H. Moser & Cie. The watch’s solid 18-carat gold dial with golden indices and hands display’s H. Moser’s iconic fumé decoration which seamlessly blends into the dark, mirror polished titanium case. The numerals in the sizeable date window are also golden and can be adjusted forward and backward, something quite remarkable for a perpetual calendar. The in-house, hand-wound caliber HMC341 is itself surrounded by solid gold plates and bridges with an exquisite matte finish and hand-engraved hallmark.

Then there’s a series of three watches by independent watchmaker François-Paul Journe: Chronomètre Souverain, Octa Lune and Octa Réserve, the first being a manual winding timepiece, while the latter two are automatic winding models. While the base of these pieces appears silvery, the base is actually solid gold. Each of the three boasts a rose gold movement and is available in 40mm platinum or red gold case.
