Orange Peel – The Cabinet
Now, I am not much for painting wood, lets get that right out there. However, this piece is made from 3/4” veneer core plywood that I was able to recycle from the collapsable crates we would get for free from work as it was considered waste material once the bladder inside was empty and was no longer useful.
The orange colour was done on a lark as it was going with me to a woodworking show and I wanted it to pop! The interior is left stained in a Puritine Pine shade (Minwax Brand). The plywood shelves, doors and top were all edge banded with 1/2” pine. The face frame is solid pine since there is a decorative cut out at the bottom of each side.
In addition to the bright colour, there is are a few interesting features to take note of. First, the what would normally be a simple door closure was crafted to be a litle more complex looking by adding rubber bands and decorative toggle pulls with fancy glass beads at the end of each pull.
Once inside, and to the right you will find another pull with a fancy glass bead. Pull it downward and it will release the top lid locking mechanism, where you will find a significant amount of storage space that is virtually undetectable.
It was a fun project and I would consider making more, ...if I only had the time. ;)
