Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford is the heart and soul of Stanford Children’s Health. Nationally ranked and internationally recognized, our 311-bed hospital is devoted entirely to pediatrics and obstetrics. Our six centers of excellence provide comprehensive services and deep expertise in key obstetric and pediatric areas: brain & behavior, cancer, heart, pregnancy & newborn, pulmonary and transplant. We also provide an additional, wide range of services for babies, kids and pregnant moms.

Job Summary

The Program Director is responsible to develop and oversee all programs under REVIVE –Center for Resuscitation Excellence on a local, regional and national level to promote high quality patient care. This includes but is not limited to education, quality, outcome metrics and research and advocacy in regards to the recognition and management of patients whose condition is deteriorating and improving survival outcomes with a favorable neurological outcome after cardiopulmonary arrest. The REVIVE -Program Director facilitates a coordinated multidisciplinary team effort to ensure quality, optimal code team performance and patient outcomes, and is responsible for the overall direction and interaction with all units and disciplines regarding rapid response and resuscitation at LPCHS. The Program Director serves as a resource, consultant, and liaison, and represents REVIVE-Center for Resuscitation Excellence on hospital committees/and/or task forces locally, regionally and nationally.

Key Functions and Expected Performance

Education

Directs and oversees the implementation of all REVIVE initiatives in collaboration with REVIVE physician leadership and Unit Education Core Leads for layperson CPR training, first responder rolling refreshers, code team training and service line training in high acuity areas, for all  families, faculty and staff. Serves as Director of the American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center at Stanford Children’s Health overseeing all simulation integrated AHA Basic Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support Courses for all LPCHS staff and faculty in addition to outside community healthcare professionals

Collaborate with the Center for Nursing Excellence to ensure consistent implementation and evaluation of REVIVE education standards among internal and community healthcare providers for programs utilizing CNE simulation lab and classrooms; provides CE’s to Nurses according to CA BRN requirements

Design the strategic plan, operationalize the mission, and allocate resource policies and budget for the REVIVE initiative in concert with LPCHS goals.

Collaborate with nursing, quality and patient safety leadership on identifying system errors and implementing necessary process and quality improvements through REVIVE consultations and simulations in regards to cognitive, technical and behavioral skills during RRT and code events.

Direct and oversee the education provided in REVIVE- Bay Area Pediatric Advanced Workshop w/Simulation (PAWWS) courses held at AHA Training Center

Direct and oversee the AHA & AAP collaborative APLS & PALS combination with Stanford School of Medicine held annually at LKS

Direct and oversee the education provided in simulation resuscitation course, Advanced Resuscitation Training for Pharmacists (ARTPharm), created for all in-house pharmacists and targets their role in RRT and code events

Share knowledge and collaborate across disciplines. Advocate for staff education/quality and development needs in the organizaiton. Coordinate, teach and monitor faculty and staff involved in the REVIVE initiative.

Recruit, train, support and oversee AHA Training Center Faculty and REVIVE- Core Education Leads knowing this effort will facilitate best practices and reinforce a systematic, collaborative  approach to the recognition and management of a patient whose condition is deteriorating throughout LPCHS

Quality

Co-Chair Code/Resuscitation Committee whose purpose is oversight, to educate and provide recommendations pertaining to a child whose condition is deteriorating

Conduct formal review of every RRT and Code event and escalate system errors to LPCHS leadership

Responsible for Rapid Response Team and Code Blue process, education, quality, and outcome measures, this includes but not limited to mufti-disciplinary performance improvement, patient safety, quality and peer-review processes.

Hold monthly correction of errors identified during the validation process, thus ensuring the validity and quality of data dispensed for resuscitation research, performance improvement, quality assurance, best practice and death prevention.

Monitor budget and formulate budget recommendations for emergency equipment, education, resources, and outreach.

Implement and oversee the tracking, collection, abstraction and entry into the GWTG-R quality database by REVIVE –Coordinator

Serve as technical expert resource for any hospital project related to emergency resuscitation, process improvements, and quality improvement, as requested.

Develop and uphold an environment of trust, fairness, integrity and confidentiality with staff and faculty.

Respond to and participate in hospital RRT and code blue events as the role of a quality resource to guide and direct resuscitation best practice. Serve as a resource and follow up for any problems or patient safety and quality issues related to emergency response.

Serve as a content expert, consultant and resource for committees, staff and units to address resuscitation or emergency response system/quality issues and facilitate information exchange.

Identify and collaborate with Patient Safety, Nursing, Medical and Quality Administration identified reportable events and collaborates facilitation of Root Cause Analysis or Peer –review.

Serve as a consultant and liaison with staff and leadership to promote agreed upon and evidence-based, quality and emergency response standards.

Support and identify quality assurance and patient safety during resuscitation efforts.

Remain current with knowledge of professional literature related to resuscitation standards and technical advancements.

Evaluate all RRT and code data, Icares and safety event reports, and identify clinical process, quality and performance improvements in collaboration with multidisciplinary team members to design and implement these identified improvements.

Support and oversee GWTG-R international database and with the Resuscitation Program Director reporting  out to Code Committee, Critical Care committee, Quality Improvement Committee, Patient Safety Oversight Committee and Quality Nursing Shared Leadership council.

Ability to work and communicate with a diverse population as part of a team

Support and oversees GWTG-R international database and with the Resuscitation Program Director reporting  out to Code Committee, Critical care committee, Quality Improvement Committee, Patient Safety Oversight Committee and Quality Nursing Shared Leadership council.

Active member of the American Heart Association Western State Quality Assurance Committee to assure education at AHA Training Centers is evidence based and consistent with AHA recommendations

Research and Outcome Metrics

Maintains currency in simulation and resuscitation education through the review of relevant journals, abstracts, and scientific literature in existing and emerging AHA & AAP science recommendations and emerging simulation technologies

Continual contribution to the science and quality of REVIVE best practice through quality and patient safety research.

Publishes in peer-reviewed journals and applies for funding (grants) to support research

Advocacy

Directs and oversees CPR Anytime program for families and members of Stanford community

Directs and oversees Pediatric Advanced Workshop with Simulation Workshop (PAWWS) for  Bay Area EMS courses

Provides consultation and education to joint ventures, community healthcare professionals in education, quality, and  outcome measures under REVIVE

Presents REVIVE initiatives research and quality Improvement studies at local, regional and national conferences

Serves as an advocate for children’s resuscitation at LPCHS, the Stanford Community, locally, regionally and nationally

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in relevant field from an accredited college or university

Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in Pediatric Critical Care or Emergency Medicine; American Heart Association Training Center Faculty and PALS instructor for minimum 2 years; Current CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) training in the protection of Human Research Subjects within 3 months of hire

License and Certifications: CA Registered Nurse (RN) (or licensed/registered in clinical discipline),AHA PALS/BLS/ Provider and Instructor; PALS or BLS or ACLS
