Gearing up for race day on Sunday, the 6th of March, the Cape Town Cycle Tour promises to be an unmissable event for all the fitness junkies and cycle-holics. With entries already closed, the Cape Argus Cycle Tours is one of THE events for cyclists. Whether you are looking for a bicycle for sale, or already have one, it is time to get your two wheels down to Cape Town and take on the challenge.

Both owned and staged by the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, Cape Town Cycle Tour 2016 is officially this event’s 39th year in the game. The world’s largest timed cycling event, this Cycle Tour will see 35 000 cyclists take on a 109 kilometre route against breath-taking backdrops that include Table Mountain.



The Cycle Tour reports that it injects around R 500 million rand into the economy of the Western Cape on a yearly basis (with the staging of this event) and raises funds for welfare, creating a positive impact not only regionally, but well beyond that as well.

Who Benefits from this Cape Argus event?

There are two main beneficiaries of the Cape Argus Cycle Tour – the Rotary Club of Claremont and the Pedal Power Association (PPA). Sharing around R 9 million of the proceeds, each has its own set of projects.

The Rotary Club of Claremont not only supports a number of projects, but also distributes funds to other Rotary Clubs in the district. Some of the projects and institutions that benefited from the support of the Rotary Club Claremont includes Marshall Memorial Homes, TEARS, CRCH (Christine Revell Children’s Home), MAD (Make A Difference), Sarah Fox Convalescent Hospital and Learn To Earn to name but a few examples.

Some of the projects and institutions that benefited from the Pedal Power Association (PPA) includes Visserhoek Primary School (Durbanville), the Anna Foundation and Purdy the Patrol Dog. PPA reported that, over the span of the last four years, it has invested almost R 7 million in more than 120 projects that relate to cycling.

While entries fees for South Africans come in at R 470, other residents from African Countries (including Mauritius) has an entry fee of R 800 and PPA Members pay R 440.

The Route itself is 109 kilometres long, reaching a total elevation of 1 085 metres. Taking you on a beautiful of tour of everything Cape Town has to offer, this is one of the ultimate tests in cycling. Starting outside the Civic Centre in Cape Town’s city centre, the route takes you through Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek, the coastal road to Simonstown. Your route also includes Chapman’s Peak, Suikerbossie and beautifully scenic route along the coast to Greenpoint.

You have a total of seven hours to complete the Cape Argus Cycle Tour (starting the clock from your group start time). If you are thinking of finding a bicycle for sale, know that this event allows you to ride any roadworthy traditional bicycle or tandem.

Other Events Surrounding the Cape Argus

Taking place on the 27th and 28th of February, 2016, the Cape Cycle Tour MTB Challenge takes place on the Le Bonheur Wine Estate and includes a 14 kilometre, 20 kilometre, 30 kilometre, 40 kilometre and 55 kilometre route.

An event has also been organised for Junior Cyclists taking place on the 5th of March at the Youngsfield Military Base in Wynberg. With age groups spanning from 0 to six and six to twelve, registration for this event takes place at Canal Walk from the 26th of February, 2016, until the 4th of March, 2016.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo, taking place from the 3rd of March, 2016, until the 5th of March, 2016, will be held at the Cape Town Stadium this year. The RaceTec Chip and Other Bicycle Accessories

In order to gain entry into the race, you will be required to present your RaceTec Chip. This RaceTec Chip is not only responsible for accurately recording your time, but it is linked to each rider’s personal profile. This personal profile includes your contact information and medical information – basically all the needed information in case of an emergency.

This chip can be worn in just two ways. The first is wearing the chip around your ankle and the second is attaching it to one of your bicycle wheels.
