Welcome to the thrid installment by the PIPA Institute. In partnership with Camden Sentido, PIPA are exhibiting an online screening programme, curated by Luiz Camillo Osorio, under the theme ‘Brazil, one country, many worlds’. Ten artists were selected and their works are going to be shown in pairs in accordance to the same topic as described below by Camillo. The screenings, exclusive to our website, will be on view throughout the months of June to October.

“The videos “Base para Unhas Fracas” by Alexandre Vogler and “Recanto dos Aflitos” by Arthur Scovino, demonstrate contrasting rhythms of the same country: the urgence of a city staggered in time and the expanded slowness of an exuberant nature. Vogler sees in the city, in the central region and old part of Rio de Janeiro, a space of hidden conflicts. His ‘lambe-lambe’ posters, like so many anonymous others spread throughout the city, announcing shows and consumptions, stagger in the ways in which they explain what they usually hide. The erotic surrenders to fragility, on the reverse of the conventions of good taste. The nude woman walks through the city spreading posters, she ceases to be an object other people’s desire and is conveyed as a subject of her own nocturnal drift. The tropical nature can be one of the most obvious cliches in Brazil. However, in Scovino’s video, it becomes a place of a metamorphosis of shapes and colours. The time that unfolds on screen, resists daily productivity and becomes a pure manifestation of beauty. A free beauty, which only envisions the experience of being before itself. It is not a domesticated nature, it is life that is transformed. These two videos by Vogler and Scovino, reveal a Brazil of contrasts that does not fit in the cliches”.

Alexandre Vogler has developed, for the past 15 years, works in the public context and communication systems, individually and within artistic groups. Vogler is a professor at the Art Institute of the State University of Rio de Janeiro and has a Master’s degree in Visual Languages (School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro). Vogler organised the group Atrocidades Maravilhosas in 2000. He directed the short-film “Base para Unhas Fracas” (2011), and directed the show “Aplique de Carne” (2013). Has recently participated in the group exhibitions: X Mercosul Biennial (2015), “Capacete” (Portikus, Frankfurt, Germany, 2013); “RUA” (MUKA, Antwerp, Belgium, 2011), “Flying Down to Earth” (MARCO, Vigo, Spain, 2010); X Havana Biennial (Cuba, 2009).

Born in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area, Arthur Scovino moved to Salvador, Bahia, in 2008 to study at the School of Fine Arts of Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). Since then, he has pursued artistic research regarding the environment, culture, and social-affective relations in Bahia, especially in Salvador. Working with many medias such as performance, installation, photography, video and drawings, Scovino investigates aesthetics and contemporary artistic thinking through performative and relational actions. His recent works talk about symbols of religion and Brazilian miscegenation.He has participated in performance art shows, solo, and group exhibitions. In 2013, he received the award from the Visual Arts Salon of Bahia. In 2014 participated in the 3rd Bahia Biennial and the 31st São Paulo Biennial.

Camden Sentido is an annual arts programme hosted by the Borough of Camden (London, UK). To coincide with the 2016 Rio Para/Olympics and the São Paulo Art Biennale, this year Camden will highlight all things Brazil. Camden Market will be home to a central programme which includes performances, gigs, talks, exhibitions and workshops by partners including Central Saint Martin’s, Wembley to Soweto Foundation, Mais Um Disco, Walls on Walls, Argent and Camden Tour Guides. Camden Sentido will also produce projects in partnership with Roundhouse, Latitude, PIPA and Frieze London.
