As a mother of four kids, I can tell you honestly that teaching and instilling healthy habits in my kids is extremely important. From the time they were born I have done everything I can to keep them happy, healthy and well. It is important to start when they are young, so they grow up learning those things and they become second nature to them. Every year, we make new goals and resolutions to improve our health and wellness. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America have a key mantra “I FEEL BETTER WHEN”. This leads to how small, daily behavioral changes can have a long-term, lasting impact. Their health and wellness program, Triple Play, is focused on these types of healthy lifestyle changes at a young age. I love this program and that it is helping our youth become stronger physically and mentally.

This year my mantra has been to be more active. I want that to trickle down to my kids, so I have been making a conscious effort to get up every 30 mins (or more often) and do something like play with them, walk the dog, or even just clean up around the house. “I feel better when” I do this and it keeps my kids more active. I also have been planning a lot more activities where we are active the whole time. I want you to be able to do the same, if you are not already, so today I am sharing 10 ways to encourage health & wellness habits in kids.

Have healthy snack options available

Limit the amount of screen time they get each day

Encourage outdoor play

Have crafting supplies on hand let them create something

Encourage them to write in a journal every day

Plan fun activities to keep everyone active

Go hiking, biking, and exploring in your area

Play sports with them/put them into sports programs

Teach them music and art, encourage them to develop their talents

Encourage their school work and push them to do their best

It is important for all kids to be healthy. We need to do what we can to help not just our kids, but the kids in our neighborhoods, towns, and other areas so each of them can learn health and wellness habits at a young age. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America are amazing supporters of this and do a spectacular job helping kids from all over in many ways. The BGCA’s Triple Play program gives them the tools for a comprehensive healthy and wellness program that is necessary to put young people on the path to a great future. The Anthem Foundation and Coca-Cola garner national support in order to make it possible for Boys & Girls Clubs around the country to operate Triple Play.

Connect with them on the BGCA Triple Play Website, or the BGCA Facebook and BGCA Twitter to learn more and see how you can help.
