After committing to Louisville back in August, GG Robinson has seen his stock soar in the college football world. As can be the case with all young men who blow up and begin to appear on the radar of more traditional power schools, naturally, he started to question his pledge to UofL and whether his ultimate place was with one of the blue bloods. After all, to be fair, when the likes of Florida and Auburn come calling, you have to at least listen. But Louisville’s coup in bringing back defensive coordinator Todd Grantham into the fold continues to pay dividends.
Last night, less than 48 hours removed from an official visit to Florida and new head coach Jim McElwain, Robinson spurned the Gators (and the likes of Auburn, Missouri, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech and Kansas State) and decided to stick with his commitment to the Cards. Obviously this strengthens – or at least reaffirms – a class that should end up as one of the best in school history. Robinson, a robust 6’4, 260 lbs, played mostly defensive end at Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia, but could end up moving to linebacker. His mix of speed and strength makes him a versatile weapon in Grantham’s 3-4 defense. 3-star JUCO OL Kiola Mahoni pledged to Louisville last as well. The 6’3/305 lb. lineman was a teammate of current UofL player Pio Vatuvei. Currently, the class ranks 31st nationally and 7th in the ACC according to 247Sports.
* In other UofL recruiting news, it looks like the Cards will also end up retaining Boynton Beach, Fl., star QB Lamar Jackson. Like Robinson, Jackson also visited Florida this weekend and was getting the full court press from McElwain and his staff. Jackson is a 4-star dual threat QB and one of the most highly coveted signal callers in the nation. On the flip side, the world of recruiting is not always so positive. In an attempt to make room for some last-minute additions before tomorrow’s national signing day, the Cards informed long-time running back commitment Matt Colburn that he was no longer allowed to sign with the team. Instead, the program offered him a grey shirt opportunity, which would allow him to enroll a year from now. Recruiting is certainly a business and it’s always difficult, but you have to feel for the kid since it was such late notice. No word yet on whether he’ll take the grey shirt option or decide to go elsewhere.
