Last week the World Health Organization told us processed meats can cause cancer. This news arrived on the back of a couple of other alarming facts — that animal agriculture is bad for the environment, and that food production needs to double by 2050.

The future of the world’s food sources is in question.

So where do we go from here? A couple of filmmakers in New York are exploring a high-impact solution in a tiny form: bugs.

High in protein and environmentally friendly to cultivate, entomophagy –eating insects – is already a practice in 80% of countries in the world. Filmmakers Johanna B Kelly and Cameron Marshad are investigating the primary challenges the edible insect industry faces in the US with their film The Gateway Bug.

The film includes footage of pioneering agritech design and development, new sustainable farming techniques, and compelling interviews with food industry stars and experts, like Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmern.

But to get the film finished, The Gateway Bug gang needs your help, so they’ve recently set up a Kickstarter campaign to get the word out (and to get funding).

You can pledge as little as $5 towards the project and get yourself a high five or a handshake from the crew, or donate as much as $5k to make yourself a guest of honor ar The Gateway Bug Banquet in New York.
